I don't have alot of time to study new software, does DVD Rebuilder have a steep learning curve? Are the default settings satisfactory? Is it expensive? Sorry, but christmas day is the first non-hectic day I've had in six months...

I believe there is a free version but I bought mine. Well worth its weight in gold, LOL. Its fairly user friendly. And yes... the default settings do a marvelous job.

It's easy to use but if your computer isn't powerful enough it'll take many hours to do it's magic. I only suggested it as it produces output that makes DVD Shrink hang it's head in shame.
Are the files playable on the PC once ripped ie that would point the finger of blame at something in the burning process and not the ripping process. Other than that i'm at a loss as other people have done season 4, in fact omegaman has done it...

edit- i told you i had chronic insomnia LOL :(

Do you mean playable in something like Power DVD? I'll have to reinstall that to find out, but I guess that's the next logical step. About my computer:

Dual Pentium 4 @ 2.6ghz apiece
2 gigs of DDR RAM
Windows XP SP2

Would this push DVD Rebuilder?

depending on settings your looking at 120 min per disc. but the time is worth it. As the vid quality will look 25-50% better than shrink.

Only thing i'm concerned about with Rebuilder is that the same results will likely occur as so far the cause hasn't been found.
I long ago gave up on Powerdvd, a couple of programs i use are Media Player Classic and vlc player, both free. I'm still unclear as to whether any of the ripped files play from the actual pc hard drive.. ie still trying to determine if the problem is with ripped files or just the burn process.

I will run the files through rebuilder tonight before beddy bye LOL. Then I will post tomorrow as to success or not. But I really DOUBT that there will be trouble. I believe you have something else going on.

Rebuild SUCCESS!!! I encoded disc 1 2 3 through the night. disc 3 was one of the discs I had a bug trying to rip. FULLY functional. Havnt burned yet, but once again, I dont believe I will have trouble. If your running anything other than Verbatim, Taiyo yuden dvds in your burner, it could be sticking its nose up at them. WHAT kind of discs are you using??? Man... if you want your discs to last, you really wanna spend a little extra and buy the better discs. Im sure creaky will vouch for me when I say that these two manufacterers are unparallelled!

Well, here's the latest. The ripped files play just fine in PowerDVD 8. The burned discs however do not play. Omegaman, I won't believe you have success until you burn a disc and play it in a set-top player. I think you may find yourself unpleasantly surprised. No matter what software I use to rip this first disc, when I put the unusable disc in the computer, AnyDVD shows me that the structure protection has survived the entire process. In my last attempt, I ripped with Dvd Fab, ran FixVTS and wrote an ISO with shrink. I mounted the ISO on a virtual drive and it played just fine in Power DVD 8. But something happens at burn time to cause the discs to not play. And before you blame Nero or my brand of discs, remember that "Reservoir Dogs" ripped and burned flawlessly yesterday. Burn one of those "successful" rips, Omegaman, and get back to us...

Trouble is, if the files play fine on the computer it's now looking very likely that something in the burn process is amiss.

I've just had a thought, you're not using Nero 8 are you ?, as it's not compatible with DVD Shrink...have a look thru the first post here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/579890

Yes I am using Nero, but as I said before, it's NEVER given me this problem before and I've used Shrink since I first began backing up my DVDs. And again, "Reservoir Dogs" went throught the process without a hitch yesterday, proving that the problem isn't Nero or the media I'm using. I wanna hear from Omegaman. If his burned disc plays, I'll be very surprised. Don't forget this: When I put an unsuccessfully burned disc in to my computer's DVD drive, AnyDVD reads it and says there is structural protection present. This is after the entire process is complete and I've found that the disc won't play. Somehow, that structural protection in surviving the entire decryption and encoding process. We need to figure out how.

Well it would still help to see a Nero logfile entry for one of the unplayable burn, while you're waiting for omegaman..

Here you go. This is the burned disc. Played in my Magnavox living room player. Now... Rebuilder/shrink does a complete overhaul to dvd files. The resulting dvd has been COMPLETELY reconstructed. I know of NO encryption that can jump out of the iso container format LOL. My ripped files were ripped with anydvd ripper. NOT shrink AND anydvd on the fly. When both work together, the resulting rips are not clean enough. Soo...what next :)
EDITED for bad spelling, what else :)

And where would I find this log? I'm using Nero 7. Is it a standard text file? Can I just copy and paste it in here?

Omegaman: Did you re-author the discs in Shrink/Rebuilder or did you just backup the entire disc? I've tried:

1. Ripping the disc with DVD Decrypter. Result: Unrecoverable read error.

2. Ripping the disc with RipIt4me (controlling DVD Decrypter). Result: Some on-the-fly file mofification failure.

3. Ripping the disc with RipIt4me (controlling DVD Decrypter) with AnyDVD running in the background emulating a non-protected disc. Result: Same as last.

4. Ripping the disc with AnyDVD. Ripping finished without a problem. Ran through DVD Shrink without a problem. Burned disc would not play.

5. Ripping the disc with DVD Fab. Ripping finished without a problem. Ran through DVD shrink without a problem. Burned disc would not play.

AnyDVD shows all these bad discs as having structural protection, even after the other processes. I'm cleaning my beretta and I'm just about ready to go kill some people over this.

ok.. what version of anydvd? if latest 6490-6492, than im afraid im at a loss here. :(
The following statements are my 2cents, and should not be taken seriously!
1. ripit4me is WAYYY out dated, chuck it.
2. Dvd decrypter is outdated, chuck it.
I used anydvd to rip to Hard drive folder, COMPLETELY decrypted. Rebuilder to encode, and build iso. BURN with imgburn. I use nero occasionly for experimentation with simultaneous burning.
The only time I use dvdfab is to remove Fullscreen version from discs that have both wide and full

Okay, I just installed DVD Rebuilder and what a sodding headache THAT was. I've never seen a more complex and annoying installer. I hope that's not an indication of what the program is like.

Okay, I'm now running DVD Rebuilder on my ripped folder. The first thing it said to me was that the DVD folder was already the size of a single-layer DVD and that no encoding was necessary. What the hell??? NOW it says it's "scanning and writing .d2v and .avs files. I thought I was trying to get an ISO file outta this part. I tell you, this problem is pushing me to my very limit. I'm a millimeter away from going into full pirate mode and stealing everything from these greedy pigs from now on. At this moment, I don't blame the people who pirate music and movies one little bit. I TOTALLY understand why they do it. And it's the industry's fault entirely, for treating legitimate people like ourselves like criminals and trying to restrict our every move. Okay, I'm done with that rant, now can I get a little help over here? I hate this DVD Rebuilder program already...

Im afraid it would be against the rules to explain dvd rebuilder in this LOST thread. There are forums on afterdawn reguarding rebuilder. DONT be intimidated by it. I was at first but it payed off in the end. Now im flying through MOST of the settings. It is a little less user friendly than shrink. But when you get the hang of it, you'll realize that its pretty logical and fairly basic.

It can be a pain to install. For now just choose the HC Encoder and finish setting it up. At least if you do get it running it should (hopefully) help identify the problem but my money's still on something in the burn process.
I hear your frustration and we're here for you until the bitter end :)

Hey guys, I just wanted to thank you for your help. I took a two-day break and when I sat back down and looked at DVD Rebuilder in a less-pissed-off frame of mind, it made perfect sense. I got season 4 copied and I can now put the originals on the shelf and wear out the backups. Sorry about all the ranting, but somebody was trying to take away one of my legal rights and I don't put up with that. I have a whole new system of backing up stuff now because of you guys. I wouldn't have found the softwares without your tips. Thanks again...
