i've got a ps2 fat (50004 i believe) that is somewhat 'dead'. when i power it on, the fan start blowing, but that's it. it does not read anything that is in the drive (the laser doesn't home or do anything), the tray (dvd-'door') doesn't open either when i push the eject button. the screen stays black, no sound either.

i know there is a modchip in it, but i do not know which one. on the chip it says 'actel proasic plus' the seller told me that it was a duo? chip? it has no other identifying marks on the chip, besides the letters a to m which are used for solderingdiagram.

the power supply is working fine, i already tried another psu of another ps2 that is confirmed to work. another psu does not make any difference.

maybe the modchip is 'dead'? will that prevent the ps2 from booting with the above symptoms? (it powers on, fan starts turning, i only see a black screen and that is it). can i disable the modchip to check? or is there another way to bypass the modchip, so that it boots from the normal ps2 bootchip? maybe there is another trick to test something? i checked the soldering connections, the seem to be fine and are still holding

The modchip MAY be the problem, but check the powerswitch and cable to the board 1st, the switch may be stuck or wore out or the cable may be loose or disconnected.

Sounds like What you have is a disc sensing problem.
Check that the laser motor moves or tries to move the worm gear.
If nothing, check for blown fuse, they are very tiny and will be located near where the motor's ribbon cable connects to the board. (You can Also try to replace the motor as a test with a known good one)
If the motor tries to move, power is reaching it. Lubricate the gear.
If all checks ok, try replacing the chip. If still nothing, board may be bad.

A fuse can be blown and show no physical signs of damage. Re-check with DVOM.
Were you able to check the mod chip? (I don't work with mod chips so I can not tell you how to bypass them, sorry). You can also try
checking the disc sensor switch. If ok, then
take out the MB and look for possible hairline cracks near the area of the laser cable and motor cable. Also check for poor solder connections.
For help to ID your chip, try sksapps.com.
Sorry I can't be of more help. Good luck
