Hey everyone, i'm new here...and sorry if this has been posted before..
i recently cleaned my ps2 for the first time (by myself) because i was currently experiencing the DISC READ ERROR and i was surprised that what i did worked! My previously unreadable games (some i didn't have the chance to play) worked! and now my ps2 reads the DVDs much faster now (not waiting for 10 mins for it to read)..
but here's the problem.. when i got home, i decided to play a new game in my ps2... when i put it in, it just read and read and read.... and so on... i tried my previously played game (which i just played yesterday) and now it can't be read too, all my games cant be played in my ps2! i just thought that i need to clean it again... so i cleaned the lens, adjusted the white cog thing inside... but now, it can't be read!.. i noticed something different now, (i think because i never noticed it before).. when the disc spins.. it slows down then spins faster again... it does that (slow then fast spin) until much later.. DISC READ ERROR... HELP!!!!!
Hi reborn35. Can you give us the specs of your ps2? What's the white cog thing on your unit? Is your ps2 modified already? Hope you didn't apply alcohol, or a solution similar to it, when you were cleaning your lens.
I have a similar problem as well with my ps2.My ps2 has been modified and for sometime now it did work but just recently, it stops reading any disc and it just says "Read Disc Error" but the logo screen is working. Does this mean that the lens' dead? Thanks!
A brutal yes. Never apply alcohol on your lens when cleaning it. It will cause a short circuit. Some of the circuits are exposed, or poorly insulated. Especially the circuit where the laser is generated. I did it, once, to my very first ps1 console. The lens stopped functioning. It "died", for that matter. Too bad.
Denatured should be used, but rub can be used too. It does not harm the Laser assy if used correctly.
reborn35, the laser has two lenses, you can clean the second lens (underneath the first, not easily seen) with compreesed air (a can of Dust remover for computers works)or a baby Q-tip. Also note: the noise may be caused by the worm gear guide tab not fully seating on the worm gear. Disconnect from power before servicing.
Make sure the cogs are set back to their original position. Before you first cleaned the unit.
Often times misadjusted cogs cause the problem you have described.
Put a music cd into your PS2 and try to play it all the way through.
If it plays, the laser is working for CD's. Then try a movie DVD, if both work, the laser is ok. If just one works or neither works, then the laser focusing coils or the modchip would be suspect.
