Every few times I try and write a DL disc I find out it skips on playback. If I look closely at the disc in question under a bright light I can see a dark ring. I think this is were the disc was finalized on the second layer, and it coincides with where the skipping occurs.
Drive - Lite-on DH20A3P (Firmware Version XY13)
Media - Memorex DL DVD+ 8X
Wrie Speed Used - 6X
Software - DVDFab Platinum 5.0.6.0
OS - Wndows XP Pro SP3
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The only reliable DL media is Verbatim DVD+R DL 2.4x (MKM-001-00 dye) made in Singapore burned at 2.4x.

So is it just a media quality problem? Is my write speed (6X) too fast?

Your drive may be having a problem with the inverse stacking design of the 8X discs. This is a relatively new design that increases yields, improves production quality, and eliminates the waste of reject photo polymer layers. However, the cost is that many DVD players stumble over the "upside down" layer transition. (Finalization for a DL disc that uses both layers is at the innermost section of the disc--the "end" of layer 1. Layer 0 is the first layer.) The dark ring you are seeing is the transition point, not the finalization data.
Reduce your recording speed to at least 4X; 2.4X may even be better. Your drive model ought to handle IS DL media, and the Ritek media you are using are (media are always plural) of generally good quality, second to Verbatim. You may also want to try different recording software because that, too, has an effect on recording quality.

Thanks to both of you for responding. I'll lower my write speed and try again. 2.4X isn't listed as a supported write speed(only 4X, 6X, 8X). Is there any reason I shouldn't use 2.4X?

If it's not a supported write speed, it could fail.
Also try to close all programs running in the background and no multi-tasking. This can increase your chances of a successful burn.

I dropped the write speed down to 4X and the disc came out fine. As far as Memorex media goes, I've used it to burn about 200 DVDs(mostly single layer) and as far as I can tell the only problems I've had were either my fault or a hardware error.
