I want to Rip my DVDs to .AVI to play on Media Center -but I want to keep English Subtitles for Foreign films -wanting result of AVI with English subtitles.
I can make an .AVI pretty easy that keeps the foreign language using Nero Recode + Any DVD to go to MP4 (35 min) then Pocket Divx to get it to .AVI (40 min) -this takes a little over an hour to get to .AVI format.
However, Even though Nero Recode says I can pick subtitle language it never seems to transfer to the MP4 or the AVI.
Can someone help me to get my avi playing with permanant subtitles? - my end desire is to have AVI files that play with subtitles -NOT the creation of a VCD/DVD. Does anyone know how to do this?

Assuming the DVD has been ripped to a folder and includes subtitles.
Run AGK.
Open 'VTS_01_0.IFO' from the ripped files as the input source and select an output file path and folder.
Select the language stream from the left panel and the subtitle stream from the right.
Choose a predefined or custom size for the output.
Click 'Add Job' then 'Start'.

Note that AGK is best left to run, undisturbed, overnight.
With encoders it's either fast or good - never both.

Hmmn. I have saved the VOB files 2 times and from both locations I can play the movie and I see the english subtitles working. When I run AGK it shows the audio tracks and subtitle tracks as ??? -and says "can't find audio" when I try to run it or "bad index file."

Well, for the DVD I was working on none of the programs could identify or encode the Chinese language and give me hard-coded English sub-titles except the Fair Use Wizard -thanks to cyprusrom !!

I failed a couple times getting the settings right but I was able to get the English subtitles with Chinese Audio in my .AVI

Yea!!! Fixed, Resolved.
