DVD will be in mpeg2 format, most likely a structured VOB/IFO/BUP format.

The files that i have are either .AVI or .mpg. They are all about big enough to put on a CD (not DVD) and some of them have up to 4 parts, most of them have either 1 or two parts. Are these just windows films. I want to put these files on dvd and watch them, can i??
Ive got a sneaking suspition that thay may be VCD format??

You can convert them to mpeg2 with a program called TMPGEnc and then create the structure for DVD using TMPGEnc DVD Author.

I use :
Main Concept MPEG Encoder (to convert from avi/mpeg to DVD compatible MPEG2)
TMPGEnc DVD Author (to convert MPEG2 to VOB/BUP/IFO)
The first step is a lot quicker than most encoders !:)

700MB in AVI format wil probably fill out to around 4GB in DVD format. Therefore, best to keep them seperate.

What it means is that if you convert all to DVD compliant MPEG2 , you might end up with .. say .. 7GB output if adding all 4 parts in TMPGEnc DVD Author (after you'd encoded each part seperately).
If you HAD to have all 4 parts , then you could use DVD2One or DVD Shrink to compress the 7GB VOB/BUP/IFO's...
peace
P.S. It's all getting a little confusing in this thread (lol) !;)
If you need to tell what format your files are , then download G-Spot (it's free)!!

I agree with herbsman, MainConcept is excellent. TMPGEnc, which this forum seems to like, is a great encoder but I would like to view my finished product while I am still young! Also try DVD Lab as an authoring program it allows many more fancy options or you can just make a "generic" DVD if you want. Tom
