Hi, all. I've been burning regular (single-layer) DVDs for years without a problem using RecordNow by simply creating a "data disc" with video_ts and (empty) audio_ts files. It's worked great on hundreds if not thousands of DVDs. I just "upgraded" (hmmm...) to a Sony DRX-840U dual-layer drive. It came with Nero Essentials 7.

I bought some Verbatim 2.4x DL discs from amazon (got them today, they are the Made in Singapore ones) and am ready to burn. However, these discs are relatively expensive and I don't want to make a bunch of coasters "experimenting"! So my questions are:

- Can I continue to use RecordNow in the same way -- i.e., choosing "data disc" and adding the video_ts and audio_ts files -- even though the files are now way bigger than the 4.5gb they used to be? Logically speaking it seems like this should work, but maybe RecordNow won't know how to record to a DL disc? My DL drive DOES show up as an option in RecordNow.

- I don't really want to use Nero -- I do NOT find it user-friendly in the least. Tried several options and none worked. (EG tried the data disc option that works fine in RecordNow and Nero gave me the message that I would get a non-compliant DVD; tried a video option but it won't add the video_ts and audio_ts folders. Very frustrating.)

Also on a related note, how do I get the *(&*%$ Nero search icon etc. from the bottom line of my desktop? It automatically added it when I did a search and now it won't GO AWAY, which is what I want it to do. (Everything else goes away if I right-click and check "exit," but Nero won't let me do that. Another reason I am hating it so far.)

ANY help would be appreciated, especially from anyone who has done DL burns using RecordNow! THANKS! (And happy Thanksgiving to U.S. readers! :-) )

Good choice on the Verbs. For D/L burning I use ImgBurn. Free and most likely to work. Lots of guides for it, just search.

Thanks, Olyteddy! I downloaded imgburn and set it up to burn the .iso file I created in Shrink (had Shrink encode an UNCOMPRESSED file, ignoring its messages that the file would be too big to burn). (Note, I didn't download the auto-imgburn version of Shrink as it seems just as easy to simply have Shrink create an .iso file and then have imgburn burn it -- I don't need imgburn to burn automatically.)

Anyway, everything looks ready to go in imgburn except that it lists the .iso as having a time of 874:25:04. Obviously this is wrong -- it's a 2-hour-or so film! It lists the size correctly (~8gb). Is the "time" problem just a glitch or will I have problems burning?

thanks,
Karen in New Hampshire

P.S. Just tried to burn (figured what the he**) and got the message that the image file (the .iso) wasn't formatted correctly for the DL break. Here's the imgburn log:

So does this mean I DO need the version of Shrink that has the auto-imgburn setting? If so, does that literally mean it starts burning as soon as Shrink finishes compressing? (I DON'T want that to happen.)

thanks again,

But my problem is that it DIDN'T work, as I wrote. I created an .iso file but when imgburn was about to burn it, it gave me the message I detailed in my last message -- i.e. that the layer break wasn't formatted correctly. So clearly there's something "off" in the .iso file created by Shrink - right?

Note, I haven't had a problem with Shrink/RecordNow burning regular (i.e. single-layer) discs -- I am only having problems with the .iso file created by Shrink on an UNCOMPRESSED 8gb disc that I want to burn on a DL disc.

thanks,
Karen in New Hampshire

I am not really sure what happened, but why don't you create the ISO using ImgBurn, this way it will not fuss up and say it doesn't like the layer brake?

I already had the .iso file created in Shrink, figured I could use that. In other words I was being a lazy butt. :-)

Will try again in imgburn, hopefully it will be able to burn an .iso file it creates itself! Thanks!!

:) As for the time displayed, i don't think is a glitch. I am not sure, but I would guess it means the movie is about ~87.4 minutes long, close to 1.45 hrs (not 874).

Cyprusrom, thanks for the link to the imgburn guide and for the info on the time -- just burned my first DL disc using imgburn (after having it create another .iso file) and it worked PERFECTLY -- went through the "verify" process at the end without a hitch, then I checked the disc in Shrink without a hitch (always do this when I burn a disc), then the real test -- tried to play it on an old (8-9 years?) Sony DVD player that is my pickiest, and it PLAYED PERFECTLY! Will likely stay up very late watching my first DL back-up.

So YAY and thanks again! :-)

You're welcome:)! hopefully you'll have no problem when it gets to play passed the layer brake. Enjoy your movie and stay warm( snowing and rather cold here in northern Wisconsin also).
Cheers!
P.S I got a machine older than yours,950Mhz just double the memory. Works like a charm!
