First of all, you need to be more clear on what movie your trying to backup/rip? Forget about DVD Decrypter, it has not been updated for more than 2 years now. Get the following free tools and you'll be happy in the end.

To rip - get DVDFab HD Decrypter http://www.dvdfab.com/download.htm?vid=avangate&aid=689
To transcode/compress - get DVD Shrink (it's free), unless you have Nero Recode or other encoder's engines.
To burn VIDEO_TS or ISO - get ImgBurn

Open Imgburn. Click mode > write. Select the iso you want to burn and you are off and burning.

Some assembly required.

Well it is close to 5 years old. I'd say it's time for a new one. You can get one for around 20 bucks.

Yes it could be. As Dialysis stated, those are fairly cheap these days.

There is a difference between being able to read information, and using the laser to write information.

You mean a firmware update for your driver/burner? Try google on the net for your drive or visit "rpc1 forum" http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php and look around.
