I have problems with DVD's that I've copied and then had peoblems playing. Some I had played before and they worked fine and then had problems.
Anyway I ripped them again then burned on to a new DVD and they worked fine.
Why is that ??????????

ddp is on the right track.
Low quality blank dvd's typically degrade at a much quicker rate than the higher quality variety.
In short, only use good blank dvds. Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, and Sony are the top three that come to mind.

Typically, Memorex are not very good. Using top quality media renders top quality results. Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim rank high.
As far as +/- format goes, there are plenty of threads available that go in depth to the difference.
The -R format is generally widely accepted by standalone players. If you use the +R format, booktyping to DVD-ROM is your best bet for the most compatibility.
Here's a little guide to get you started on booktyping.

My Philips plays anything I put in it. I have read that Panasonics can be very picky.
99% of all problems are between the computer and the chair.

Sony dvd players can be tricky too.

My Phillips plays anything, my Toshiba $19.99 plays anything, my wife's Sony Combo drive plays with itself when I put in a burned disk. Stick with the cheapies when it comes to players playing burned movies.
Stay with the good stuff, burn at 1/2 the recommended speed of the disk, and avoid multitasking while burning. Defragging your drives seems to help when you are approaching capacity on the drive you are storing the files on.

I too must agree. The least expensive of my dvd players have been the most trouble free and played every disc i had (including all the burned discs)

I've got a slutty little Magnavox el-cheapo that will play anything i toss at it. I prefer the cheapies as they typically seem to be less picky.
