I'm pretty new to torrents. I haven't been involved with downloading anything since Napster. Is this a safer form of downloading? And wouldn't everybody who downloads torrents on a wireless network be publicly displaying it?

I do not understand the question. I assume you are hoping torrents are safer than simple P2P.

It is not as safe as the original Napster but safe enough. I bet you use a car to get around town. You chances of a traffic fatality are much greater than anything but a hand slap with torrents.

They are safer the simple P2P. You can't build a simple and legal activity collector for torrents. With simple P2P each client advertises what it has and invites anyone to browse their goodies. You can collect information legaly and easily. Then harvest the biggest offenders. Even the harvesting has stopped. There are legal technicalities preventing the media maffia (MM) from suing P2P users. The MM now is working to change the laws making it clearly ilegal to download copyrighted material.

Torrents do not advertise their goodies nor do they allow browsing of their goodies. You have to hack into the computer to see the goodies. This is probably done all the time but not legally. You can't expect to win a court case if your evidence was obtained illegaly. In fact P2P is in the grey area of the law for most countries while hacking is jailable offence.

Realistically, the biggest threat to a torrent user is their own ISP. This is for using too much band width. They may cut off your service. This is bad for business so they usually give you 3 strikes before you are really cut off for good. You can aquire a serious amount of tunes before the first strike. You might want to only down load (DL)on weekends if you are not sure about your ISP. Many ISPs do not care, others want you to only use a certain amount of band width and then only off hrs. For instance in the US Comcast allows a generous 200 G per month. You will be attacked if you do much during business hrs. After an attack you will not be able to DL or maybe even use the internet. The attack is usually performed by a robot thing that probably keeps no records. That means it is between you and the 'beast'. The ISP is not even aware of what is going on. You may also get attacked if you are doing too much. This is actually helpful because it keeps you out of the usage level that the ISP will need to sanction you. That is good for them and good for you.

There is a movement to change the laws removing the privacy laws for P2P users. This has happened in Japan, New Zeeland and France. There torrents are not at all safe.

Enjoy till they change the law in your country. You will find torrents beat the hell out of Napster or itunes.

Oh, and only DL material that is not copyrighted! Then you will not be doing anything wrong. All the torrent sites have legal stuff to download.

Thanks for the help. My main question, though, is downloading torrents from a public wireless network like a university. If you connect to the wireless network to download torrents, wouldn't the university or somebody else recognize the illegal activity and bust those using it?
