Hello everyone, i am usually a bit technology impaired, but i have had some problems with my about 5 year old, non slim(dont know what thats called) PS2. It originally began with games not loading sometimes, and sometimes games freezing up on mid, but i sucked it up rebooted and tried again. But the problems got worse, and were soon accompanied by the dreaded disk read error, along with the clicking/grinding kind of sound that is usually associated with DRE. Eventually the whole system became unplayable, and i just quit using it for about a month, opting instead to take out some of my gaming desire on my wii. But although the wii is great, it is lacking in sports related games, which are my favorite, so i set out to get my playstation in working order. After browsing around the internet, i tried several suggestions that didnt involve cracking the ps2 open, such as turning it on its side, upside down, and cleaning the CDs. I then found a guide on youtube with good comments, and cracked the PS2 open, breakng the warranty(which didnt matter cuz it expired over 4 years ago). I followed the guide, and took the top of the CD drive off, and ejected the cd holder to reveal the stuff underneath. I cleaned out the dust as best i could, and then using the prescribed alkaline grease i greased the two metallic silver bars parallel to each other, and flanking the laser. I then put everything back, and tried to load a game. WHile there was no disk read error, the disk did not load. THe machine tried to read the disk, the screen went black, like it would if the game would load, but then it went back to the screen where the memory cards are shown, and the disk was there, but once you click on the disk, it will only return to the previous screen. So i tore it open again, cleaned the laser as shown online, and tried adjusting the laser angle, but the problem remained the same. So, i was wondering if there anything else i can do, should do, suggestions, etc. Or if the thing is just ruined.
I thank anyone who has read taken the time to read this honking thing, and apologise for not knowing the correct lingo. I am not even sure if this is the right place to post a thing like this, but if it is not could someone kindly point me to the right place. There is plenty of info in AD (after dawn) forums relating to your problem. Search for DRE (disc read error) you will find all the info you need. From cleaning the laser to replacing the laser.
