Tmpgenc v2.58 problems

I just wondered if Im doing everything right with Tmpgenc because it keeps locking up.
I've ripped a film (movie only , no menu etc) to HD and got it all working from there.
Then I run DVD2AVI over the vobs to get a .D2V project as per the Doom9 guide.
I also use Ifoedit on the vobs to get the TmpgTemplate.txt.
I start Tmpgenc and open the .D2V file and go through the various settings like the 2 pass vbr , stream type to mpeg 2 etc as per Doom9 guide again but when I get to the part about the GOP structure where you press settings and load the TmpgTemplate.txt my machine hangs , for hours if I leave it.
As far as I can see theres not much I can do about the TmpgTemplate.txt as Ifoedit creates it with only a couple of options which I have tried .
So am I missing something here , a critical setting or maybe latest version of something is buggy and I should revert to old one.
Do I really need to load the TmpgTemplate.txt , what would happen to the final movie if I just use the rest of the settings and let Tmpgenc do its thing with out TmpgTemplate.txt ?
