help with R4 for DS!

hi! i just got myself a R4 for christmas and i know its christmas and not many people will be on the forums, but im really really anxious in getting this ds to work.
however, when i got this R4, i tried to put it in after putting in a game and it came up with a "couldn't find_DS_MENU.DAT"
and now im like "OH NO!!!" ): so im hoping this isnt a bug that the R4 has and it doesnt work. do i need to install anything that will make it work??? i DIDNT even get a CD for install and stuff. all i got was the USB and the R4 and a 1GB microSD.

hello mate first where did you buy your r4ds from and lets hope its an original and not one of the many fakes , copies and clones .
lets try the original firmware first get it here - v1.18 english - http://r4ds.cn/download/r4_v1.18_kernel.html
download and unzip then copy the 2 folders and 2 files to your memory card , fingers crossed that its an original r4ds .
iff you have been unlucky and bought one of the many copies then try here for your firmware - look under r4ds clones - http://www.linfoxdomain.com/nintendo/ds/

ps . there is a custom firmware for the r4ds called ysmenu if you want to try it let me know and ill send you the link , ysmenu works fine on my original r4ds and has better compatibility for the latest games .

my friend told me she bought it from my from "Real Hot Stuff."

RHS is a very reliable seller, I bought my last 15 flascarts from them.
I would be willing to bet that it is a "genuine R4".

Hi all I to have a R4 and there was no cd for the software. I have downloaded the latest software from the R4 web site have have droped and draged the four files onto the micro sd card. When I put it into the DS and turn it on it just says it is loading and thats it. Any help would be grand

i still haven't fixed the problem with my R4.
since i now know that it's a fully functional R4,
i need a full step by step instuction on how to make it work.
when i got visited http://r4ds.cn/download/r4_v1.18_kernel.html , i downloaded the v1.18 english and it was a RAR. however, i dont understand how i can unzip a RAR file...
any suggestions or links on what to load into my microSD? to make the "couldn't find_DS_MENU.DAT" disappear?

as MaryD7 says use 7zip to unrar the download .
then copy the 2 folders and 2 files to your memory card .
2 folders - _SYSTEM_ + moonshl
2 files - _DS_MENU + _DS_MSHL.NDS
thats all you need on your memory card for the r4ds to work .

ps. once you have unrared the v1.18 firmware and copied the 2 folders and 2 files to your memory card your r4ds should work fine .
its because you are not unraring the v1.18 firmware that you are having problems , you have to unrar it .
