Pioneer may OEM some of their drives for other manufacturers, its not uncommon, but until you mentioned that i dont believe i have heard of that before. What does the label on the base of the drive say. Usually an OEM drive will have a designated drive ID, say teh Pioneer DVR106, will be a Memorex 106 or something.

It doesnt look like an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) and the Nero info tool shows it as a Memorex drive on the website specified. My guess is your computer is confused lol

Its difficult to know to be honest, but i would guess that a lot of the more recent 4x writers will have the capabilities if they can write both formats

Hi guys, The Memorex Dual X1 is a Pioneer 106D drive. I know because I have one. I just re-flashed the firmware to make it a true Pioneer 106D so I could unlock the rip speed. As a Memorex, max rip was about 2x. Now I get 8x rips on dual layer, and 12.5x rips on single layer movies. What a difference. I tried the same movie with DVDshrink before and after on rip times. 1hr 40 minutes before. 28 minutes after.

so should i update the firmwire also?....does it increase the reading speeds and everything?
also i have heard that all of the pioneer +rw drives will be firmwire updatable to dvd9 so that mean this one will too?

Thats not true. What we believe is that any drive after the DVR106 (including it) will be able to burn DVD+R9. This is because before that DVD Drives were only -R and so far -R hasnt come up with Dual layer discs. This is only speculation based o Pioneer showing one at the Vegas conference using a 106

If you update the firmware from Memorex site, it won't help your rip speed. You need a hacked firmware like I used to first convert it to a TRUE pioneer drive. This will void the warranty. Once you convert it to a Pioneer 106D, then there is another hacked firmware that unlocks the speeds. I gave it a lot of thought before deciding to go through with it. If done wrong, you end up with a dead drive that can't be used. But the improvement was outstanding. I'm completely satisfied. Here is the site I got the info and firmware from. http://forum.rpc1.org
It does work if done right.
Jerry
Also once it is converted to a Pioneer 106D, you will be able to apply any future firmware updateds that are for the Pioneer drive. Maybe the dual layer one if it ever happens.

in that case i just keep it as a memorex drive for now and then in the future if they dont have the firmware for memorex then i will convert it but until the dvd9 comes out i will keep it as memorex

Edit- can u send me the link of the firmware so i can read about it and stuff? and if i want it in the future

The first link is the forum discussion about the Flash.

Second one is the download for the firmware.
Hope I typed it right.

Jerry

Here is a better link to the firmware.
