Ive had this drive for about 4 months. Ive been backing up and burning my DVDs at 4x with no problems. Then I bought a batch (2 packs of 10 each) of 4x TDK DVD+Rs (first time I use these) and the first disc burned at 4x with no problem. The next 4 started burning at 2.4x with no option for 4x. Opened the other pack and burned another batch of TDKs at 2.4x, except for the last one that burned at 4x. Being that its the first time I use TDKs I figured, eh, whatever. Probably some type of odd incompatibility.
So today I go and buy a 25pack of Memorex 4x DVD+Rs, which is what I usually use to back up and burn my DVDs. They only burn at 2.4x. Ive gone through 4 and they all burn at 2.4x. I use DVDInfoPro and the media registers at 2.4x. Any ideas? Would flashing to the same/different firmware make a difference? Im on 1.A0.

Hi Pennywise:

Sounds like what happed to me a few weeks ago. Check to make sure you have DMA enabled. If you have had a lot of CRC Redundancy errors lately Windows XP slows down the burner and puts it in PIO mode. Read the thread on Feb 25, How to Force Windows XP into DMA mode. It may be the answer to your proble....

Update the firmware, 1.A0 is old with few media supported. Use for example FSC 1.E4 or HP 3.10: http://etna.rpc1.org/nec/index.html

Update....
Nothing changed after following the DMA link (checksum entries keep coming back) and updating my firmware. Im still only able to burn at 2.4x.
I tried using DVD Decrypter to rip a movie and then used Nero but it still attempted to burn at 2.4x.
Even if Im trying to back up data it burns at 2.4x so its not a ripping issue.
Im running out of ideas.

Update v.2....
Well, it appears to be a firmware and/or disc issue. I found an old Memorex disc that came from a batch that I know for a fact burned at 4x. Popped it into the drive and, what do you know, its recognized at 4x. AAHH!!! Im glad its not drive or OS issue but now I have to find a firmware that will recognize these new Memorex discs as 4x.
By the way, DVDInfoPro recognized the older Memorex as a RICOHXXXXX disc but the newer one was unidentifiable.
