Hi,

Ok I would like to know how most people sort their music collection.
Here is what I am asking.

Is your music folder set up like this-

Aerosmith - (Then ALL their music in that folder)
Billy Joel - (Then ALL his music in that folder)

Or like this-

Aerosmith - Dream On
Aerosmith - Jaded
Aerosmith - Walk This Way

Billy Joel - An Innocent Man
Billy Joel - My Life
Billy Joel - Pressure

One other question.
Does anyone use MediaMonkey? Is it a recommended piece of software to do all my tagging with. Currently I use MP3Tag

Thanks.

I Never Use Signatures.

I use mp3tag to do bulk tag editing and when using freedb or Amazon as a source. MM does these processes as well but not as easily. I use Media Monkey (MM) if I want to use filenames of folder names as the source. I have not tried the script that uses the folder name as a source. I discovered that only rescently. The UI for MM is far superior when using the file name as a source.

I organize first by a few types. In the biggest type the tunes are organized by artist/album/tune. Some types do not lend to the other structure such as sound tracks and VA collections.

With large librarys the less complicated structure will hurt performance and will be cumbersome to use. Once you get over 1000 objects in a folder performance degrades quickly. If you think you will never have more than 1,000 albums you can use either method.

From MM you can pick several sorts.

I tend to gravitate towards RealPlayer or iTunes.

I don't like iTunes much, but you can Consolidate Libarary to get a nice, structured list

Artist > Album > Songs

And RealPlayer, you can move all music into nice little folders, and sort however you please.

I have no experience with MediaMonkey, sorry.

Meh. Organizing them is a PITA so I name them 'SongTitle - Artist - Album.MP3' and keep them all in a folder called 'MP3'. Works for me. I use WinAmp to sort and select them as needed.

I sort my folders like this

My Music
Aerosmith - Album Name [Year]
Aerosmith - Album Name [Year}
Aerosmith - Album Name [Year]
Billy Joel - Album Name [Year]
Billy Joel - Album Name [Year]
Billy Joel - Album Name [Year]

I used to do it the other way with a sperate folder for each artist but I find this way more convenient now especially in Vista which has all the sort and search tools right there in the folder
