I just picked up a E50 as well this weekend :)

I think you can just rename the .VOB file as a .MPG file and then you can view it and edit it if you wish?

Hiya knb,

Did you finalise the disk in the DMR-E50S?

Quite often with standalone dvd recorders, the disk needs to be finalised BEFORE it can be read in a PC drive...

Read the manual.

Hope this helps...

yup! i forgot to finalize. oops. but i'm actually having another problem with my Mpeg file. when i changed the extension of my VOB file to Mpeg, and then put it onto my DVD authoring software, it was only 8 seconds;kind of. if i clicked down on the timeline of the movie it was all there, but the time of it was reading 8 seconds. then when i tried to burn it it didn't work. does anyone know why this is? hope i explained that well enough:)

DOH!

Now you can read the VOBS on your PC...

What editing do you want to do on the contents of the VOBS?

The editing you want to do decides what path you take from here on.

We need to know before we can proceed..

Have Fun...

The Panasonic E50 records video as an .mpg .. even at the highest setting (XP) I assume that there is compression?

I'd like to convert my mpg files that the E50 produces to DivX AVI .. what would be the easiest way to do this?

Is that its NORMAL mode?
Its DEFAULT, or do you have to set it for that?

It gives me a .vro file which I believe is encoded as an .mpg (I might be wrong?).

The XP is the highest setting and gives 1 hours worth of recording on a standard 4.7gb DVD RAM disc

(other settings give 2 hours - which I think is the default, 4 hours and 8 hours)

Ah!!!

VRO files are somewhat more difficult to handle....

TMPGEnc DVD Author v1.5 can handle them directly, creating a DVD Structure complete with menus, chapter points etc.

It also supplies edit cut facilities.

It can also output MPEG2 files if you use it right (a handy by product of the process).

I used TMPGEnc to try and convert my .mpg file to a .AVI file using the xvid codec.. however on my XViD AVI file there is no sound recorded?

The .mpg with sound was 72,366Kb
The .AVI XViD no sound 9,258Kb

so this is the sort of compression in file size I'd like

Ultimately I'd like to put my finished files on the internet for download so need lower file sizes than the .mpg's the Panasonic DMR-E50 produces

OK,

There is a difference between TMPGEnc (the encoder), and TMPGEnc DVD Author (the authoring package).

As you are using TMPGEnc with the xvid codec, you MAY have to demultiplex the audio first (I don't know, I have never mucked about with DivX or Xvid - too low quality and non-standard).

There are probably better programs out there for that conversion.

Sorry I can't help you with that one :(

Have Fun...

ok, so what I've done now is used DVD to VCD AVI DivX Converter to convert the IFO file from the DVD I made to Mpeg. I thought you used the VOB files, but the converter selected the IFO instead, and it worked. I wasn't sure what settings to put it on, so it came out a little pixelated. What I want to do is take the DVD that I made from the recorder, take that content and add a menu and chapter selection page. I am doing this on Ulead DVD Workshop. Like I said before, when I just changed the VOB to Mpeg extension Ulead only reads the movie being 8 seconds, when it's 58 minutes. It would be so easy if the Mpeg would say it is the real time in Ulead. I've also tried DVD Architect 1.0, and that also says 8 seconds. And, when I click down the time line the entire movie is there, so I know it's not a partial VOB file. Can anyone please help me out!!??
thanks in advance :)
