Well, bit the bullet and bought a dual Athlon 2100 system. Pretty quick! I have tried a lot of different methods to get the best performance out of ReMPEG:

Tried running dual threads.

Tried running two instances of ReMPEG (each one using a separate processor) to transcode different parts of a movie (or to different movies) at the same time.

Oddly, with dual threads on the two CPUs, it's only ever using about 68% of my total processing power. Using a single CPU for one thread, it uses 100% of that processor. When I run two instances of ReMPEG, one of them always crashes within a few minutes. I've got my processing rate down to under 90ms per frame, finishing an average movie in under three hours. Watching the performance history, though, it is obvious there are abundant resources that I can't seem to get ReMPEG to take advantage of. If anyone is familiar with ways to tweak a Dual CPU in WinBlows, I'd be interested in hearing what you've got to say.
