I'm new to this site and would like to know if there is a free software download that will rip copywrited and encrypted DVDs. Of course I'm looking for the best quality and easiest to use software I can get. Thank you!
1) decrypt to HDD with dvdfab HD (free version) Or use paid for version
2) process files (all) with fixvts 3) shrink files with dvd shrink, output as iso/image to HDD
4) burn iso/image file with IMgburn

thanks bryston. is this step works with Vista? coz u see i used to burn movies with decrypt/shrink/nero or nti before and all worked well. when i started using Vista and doing the same process, i started having problems, not with burning but playing back the copied disc to a dvd player.
so if i follow your suggestion, i should be ok to backing up my dvd movies again?
Been using Vista since first day of public release 2 years ago and never had a problem... Sounds like you're using "DVD Decrypter" to rip and it hasn't been updated in years so can't handle the newer encryptions... also, if you're using the newer versions of Nero (anything above 7), it doesn't play nice with DVD Shrink anymore so will end up with messed up DVDs.
If you follow the info in bryston's post, you'll have no problems...
DVDFab is constantly updated (latest version is 5.2.3.0) and will easily rip to your HDD. FixVTS will clean up the ripped files so DVD Shrink can process. DVD Shrink as usual and output back to your HDD.. then burn to disc with ImgBurn (best burner out there and again, its free). If you really do want to use Nero to burn (and its a newer version), it can handle the Shrink output files from your HDD, it just can't handle auto-burning from Shrink any more.
And, as ferguj1 mentioned, you'll want to run the programs as an Administrator. (if you still have problems, you could set to run in "XP Service Pack 2 compatibility mode" in program properties.

i followed every single step (i think)and downloaded dvdfab, shrink, fixvts and imgburn that bryston suggested but still wouldnt work for me. my problem is when im shrinking the file.
On the instruction link, it says on no.31 "Select ISO Image File and Burn with IMGburn" but on my select target, it doesnt that so I chosed to just burn from hard drive instead. And when the shrinking was done, it didnt shoot straight to Imgburn as instruction 36 said. I tried to open Imgburn but i couldnt seem to work out how to make it work, where to find files etc. i feel so stupid...maybe i am. can someone please help me out...thank you guys!

In order to autoburn with ImgBurn (to have the choice of "Select ISO Image File and burn with ImgBurn) requires a special version of DVD Shrink available HERE.
You will probably find however, that most regulars aren't much in to autoburning, but choose to preview their backups prior to wasting a disk. If you saved the files to a folder on your HDD, simply open ImgBurn and click on the "Write files/folders to Disk" icon. Navigate to the folder where you chose to save them backing up with DVD Shrink and click on it. Be sure to select the proper ODD for your output. Set your burn speed to 4x (to start with) by clicking on the "Device" tab on the upper right of the window. Then click start. It will probably pop-up a window asking you about the file name, either accept what it is or change it to your own liking and carry on. No problems :)
