DVDFabHDDecrypter (free) will remove any encryption from a commercial DVD and let you rip it to your hard drive but you'll end up with multiple file's that could add up to 8-9 G. Alltoavi will let you combine just the movie and you can then delete the original. Far smaller but make sure you have the space on your hard drive to start. Never tried this but see no reason why not.

You can rip as Mistycat suggested then play the files back for previewing with VLC.

VLC is freeware, you can acquire it here from aD.

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_...players/vlc.cfm

And i prefer it over most media players due to it's lightweight (less bloated) and is very versatile as to the files it can play.

After you've ripped to HD navigate to the VIDEO_TS.IFO, right click-> open with-> WMP (or whatever you want try) and see if it plays.

Many times you can simply drag and drop the IFO onto your desktop player icon. This doesn't work with VLC but will with ISOs.

like the previous post dvd shrink will work..open up dvd shrink..go to file and click on open folder..should start playing in the player section..or if you want to you use media player..just go into the Ripped folder>Video>and select the largest file in it and tell it to open with media player..should work for you..usually the largest file is just the movie

This is insane. Watch a movie in Shrink's preview window with absolutely no way to navigate the DVD, no chapters no FF/RW etc?

Have you missed that fact that most DVDs have usually 5 VOB's that you will have to play separately? And once again no chapter stops, subs etc.

i'm sorry usually when i watch a movie..i generally watch it thru..hence all i really need is the play/pause button..about it..but that's just me..
oohh and you can make the preview screen full screen, you don't have to keep it small..

actually..i've been able to play the whole movie fine(just right click on the largest file in the VIDEO folder and open it with media player classic or equiv.) and use the slide bar if necessary..was giving just a quick/simple way of playing it..never had an issue before..that's how i've done it if it was on my HD

but since someone is getting so uppity..here's a guide on how to play ripped dvds thru media player classic: http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/...__bup_files.cfm

There is no largest file. There will usually be 4 identically sized 1,048,574 KB VOBs plus one smaller one. The link you so graciously provided states:
Quote:
In order to play the DVD, you can to locate the VIDEO_TS.IFO file. Other IFO files will work but in order to play the entire DVD you must select this file and click Open.

Sound familiar? Did you even bother to read my post?

Did you even bother to read the guide you linked to? The one that doesn't support your method in the least? The one that reiterates what I previously stated?

Here's a link for you.

I thought that the purpose of aD was to help others and ourselves by promoting the sharing of our ideas and knowledge. I may be relatively new to some of this and don't pretend to know anywhere near what many members here do, but what I do know is that there is no one, sure-fire, absolute right method for doing things. People have different ways of doing things, that doesn't make their way right or wrong, but without listening to other points of view how do we expand our knowledge? Pointing out what you may think are mistakes in the steps another person takes is fine, but there is right way and a wrong way to go about it.
Not trying to get on a soapbox, but MysticE, I think that your post does none of these things and the link was definitely uncalled for. Just my 2cents.

OK, since we're on the subject of "there are multiple paths to the same goal", this is what i do.

CloneDVD/AnyDVD to my hard drive.

WinDVD to play the ripped DVD from the Hard drive.

There are many ways to accomplish the task...many of which have already been discussed here in this thread as well as countless other places here at AD and all over the internet.
