I currently own a Pioneer A05 burner and have had no problems with it and always stick to using Ritek media. I like to try and keep up with new technology and the introduction of 8x burners has made we want one....really bad, especially knowing that 4x media can be made to burn at 8x. The only kind of burner I would buy is a Pioneer, simply because I have had no problems with it and it has a good reputation. The A07 looks the part and I`m glad to see the cd write speed has been increased. The only worry I have is will it be able to write the dual layer discs when they are available. I know that pioneer demonstrated the A06 burning dual layer but do people think they will release firmware for this? From what I hear dual layer is just around the corner and I cant see Pioneer bringing out a new batch of burners if they did not think they would be able to burn dual layer. So the question I`m really asking is should I buy the A07 or wait to see if it will be compatible with dual layer discs.

Hi allin, I have read 2 completely different stories on this. The first was that the unit they used had only a firmware upgrade to burn dual layer discs. The second was that the first story wasn't true and that the burner was also hardware modified. From reading the forum input from where I get my firmware, the single layer drives can't support dual layer burning with just a firmware upgrade. I don't know who to believe, but the firmware forum has never lead me wrong yet. If dual layer burning is what you want, I would wait a few more months for the new drives.

I would also wait to see what happens you really dont have anything to lose by waiting. Not to mention that even if drives can be upgraded w\firmware the media is most likely going to be VERY expensive at first. Anyone remember the good old days of $5 cd-r's? OUCH!

Thanks for taking the time to reply guys. I guess it would be a safe bet just to wait a few months. I just thought Pioneer would do a firmware upgrade if they have just released the 107... it make sense. A couple more months burning 4x is not going to kill me so I will just bide my time till I get some concrete information on this dual layer stuff.
