Hopefully someone can finally help me with this. I have a Sony VGN-FS550 laptop with a Matshita UJ-831Da DVD+/-RW drive. I know this laptop is a few years old, but I have ever had any problems with it before. Up until a couple of weeks ago, I had never burned a DVD with it. I have burned numerous CD-R's without a single problem. I successfully burned about 5 DVD's with COPYtoDVD and then after messing with a few other burner programs, my drive quit reading blank DVD-R's. It still reads CD-R's perfectly fine. I did have Nero 6 on here that I had been using to burn CD's but since it wouldn't burn the files I converted via DVD Flick, I chose to use the other program.

I have tried numerous fixes. I have done a system restore to back before I even started burning the DVD's. I have uninstalled the drive and rebooted. I have deleted the upper and lowers in the registry. I completely uninstalled every burning software on the computer, even the Click to DVD program that came on the computer. I cannot upgrade the firmware for the drive because since this is a Panasonic drive, there is no support for it. Nothing has worked. No updates available from Windows or Sony that have fixed the problem either.

I feel very strongly that there is some conflict somewhere that I just cannot spot. Any help with this would be appreciated more that you could ever imagine.

Thanks

Windows doesn't support DVD's, so what software have you now installed to check the DVD's (Imgburn?)

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, when I try to use Imgburn, it still says "Device not ready (incompatible medium installed)". Here is the log file from when I first start the program. There is one warning in it.

I 09:41:49 ImgBurn Version 2.4.2.0 started!
I 09:41:49 Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600 : Service Pack 3)
I 09:41:49 Total Physical Memory: 514,480 KB - Available: 97,884 KB
W 09:41:49 Drive F:\ (FAT32) does not support single files > 4 GB in size.[/i][/b]
I 09:41:49 Initialising SPTI...
I 09:41:49 Searching for SCSI / ATAPI devices...
I 09:41:49 Found 1 DVD±RW!

Not real sure as to the importance of that error though. Before this problem started, when I inserted a blank DVD-R, it would read the disc and give me the autoplay box to select from and it also showed a blank disc when I would look under My Computer. Now, I put the disc in, it makes a few noises, like its reading the disc, but it still shows nothing.

"Device not ready (incompatible medium installed)"

That message is from the burner (Imgburn is merely passing it on).
It's saying that it can't do anything with the disk.
Unless you can update the firmware (which is unlikely) or try different disks (Verbatim would be good) or clean the laser, I fear you are looking at a new burner.

Thanks for the help!

I have indeed tried different brand discs, including Verbatim. I am afraid the drive might be going south too. It still does not make much sense to me that it will still read CD-R's with no problem. Also, this being a laptop, I don't see replacing the drive being very cheap. Something still aches at me that it is some type of software/hardware conflict since it did it while I was messing with other burner programs.

Thanks for the advice though.

The burner uses different lasers for CD and DVD - guessing it's the same laser that reads too.

It very well might be. I am just not that versed in how these lasers work. I guess I am just too stubborn to give up the idea of some type of conflict.

Start > Run > msconfig
Click the Startup Tab > Disble All
Click the Services Tab > Hide all Microsoft Services and Disable All.
Reboot.

The registry has been cleared of the upper/Lower filters?
You have no burning software installed except Imgburn?

Insert a blank CD and see if Imgburn recognizes it (click the Device tab).
The space available, ATIP information is read by the burner from the disk.
Insert a blank DVD, it should read the status and manufacturer ID.

This information is read by the burner and passed on to Imgburn.

If required run msconfig again and enable the items and reboot.

Ok...tried what you said. I disabled everything and tried. It successfully recognized the CD-R, but still didn't the DVD-R. The upper and lower filters have been deleted. The only burner program still left other than ImgBurn is Sonic Record Now. Something keeps telling me that there is something in the registry that I am just not catching.

Can you get rid of Sonic?

Ok....got rid of Sonic and still won't recognize. Is there anything that any of those other programs could have changed in the registry, but was not changed back upon their uninstall? The upper and lower registry filters have been deleted many tries ago. The lower registry filter reappeared after some change, but I deleted it and haven't seen it since. I still don't believe that the laser is bad since it will read a copyrighted DVD movie.

When you use your imgburn or what ever there should be a box that drops down stating which drive you want to use. ie: cd drive or dvd-rw drive. If it just shows just the cd drive and dvd is gone try reinstalling your drive and see what that does.

My drive is a combo drive in my laptop. So, there is only one choice. I have uninstalled the drive, but still didn't help.
