I have a 32 Gig memory stick that some how has got its self write protected,I Tried to format it but computer says it can't because its write protected.How do you get rid of this write protection. I tried in disc management to delete the partition but could not as right click
would not high light the delete button.
Can anyone help as this stick is useless now.

It will not work on my Laptop and it is a new one,just the same can not delete or write to it , can not format because of the write protection. The problem started when I tried to download a movie to it and half way through it just poped up the message write protected. I thought it ment the movie but no I can not add any more files to the stick at all.

Do this procedure carefully.
It involves making changes to the Registry.
Note the exact name of the keys mentioned - it's easy to mistake similar names.
If you wish, create a System Restore point before proceeding.
The procedure is to check for the presence of certain entries in the Registry - it may be that they don't exist and another procedure will have to be tried.
1) Click Start-> Run.
2)Type regedit and hit enter.
4)Click on the plus sign next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
5)Click on the plus sign next to SYSTEM
6)Click on the plus sign next to CurrentControlSet
7)Click on the plus sign next to Control
8)Click on the plus sign next to StorageDevicePolicies
(If StorageDevicePolicies does not exist, goto step 11)
9)Right click on WriteProtect and click modify.
10)If the value data is 1 change it 0 (zero) and click ok.
11)Repeat steps 7 to 10 for ControlSet001 and ControlSet002 .
(the 'StorageDevicePolicies' key may or may not exist in these hives)
If the entries don't exist, don't restart.
12)Close Registry editor and restart the computer.

Hi I did what you suggested, but could not find storage devices idid repeat of step 7 and clicked on control,AGP the only thing that seemed to have a value was system Boot Devices Reg S2 Multi (0)disk
rdisk (0) partition (1) I must admit I am not super at this sort of thing bit of a plodder so if I get it stuffed up have patience.

Don't change anything that does not correspond exactly to the steps.
If the values don't exist - stop.

Hi thanks for the detail,it was great and easy to follow,but I do not have any thing between StillImage and SystemResources there is no StorageDevicePolicies.

If you wish to create the key, do this.
Start the Registry Editor
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control key
Right-click the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control key, and select New > Key from the menu.
Name the new key StorageDevicePolicies
From the top menu select Edit > New > DWORD Value
Name the new value WriteProtect
Right-click the WriteProtect value and choose Modify
In the Value Data: box enter 0 (zero)
(zero should un-protect and 1 should protect)
Exit the registry editor, and restart your computer
You will find that ControlSet001 and ControlSet002 will automatically have the new key under 'Control' - bear this in mind if the value has to be changed for 'WriteProtect' or 'StorageDevicePolicies' has to be deleted.
Also note that the policy also applies to external drives connected to USB ports.
Images are uploaded to a hosting service like 'Tinypic' and the image code is pasted into your post.
The preview button shows what it will look like.
Also - the images refer to my PC;the names shown on folders are different from yours - I cut and pasted the images , else they would be too large to post.

Hi there I followed your instructions and put in the new key StorageDevicePolicies ,Top menu DWORD Value named it Write Protect and set value at 0. Did restart and all 3 ControlSet,001,002,003,all had the new key and all were at 0. I then went to my stick drive and it let me format looked good at this point but it then said drive could not be formatted, then I checked the properties it should all blue no usable space but registering no bytes. I think this stick might be buggered what do you think ?

Try setting all the values to 1, reboot and try again.
To post an image, hit the 'Print Screen' button and edit the image in Windows Paint.
Upload it and copy the link information to the post.

Hi went to reset to i but could not find on controlset001 StoreageDevicePolicies, it is there on 002 and 003 should that be ? will set 002 and003 to 1 and check.

Current Control Set
ControlSet001
ControlSet002
I don't have ControlSet003.

Well I think I am about stuffed ,tried ZEro and 1 but to know avail when I check the properties it shows the Disc full with no free space it won't Format it will try but in the end it say cannot Finnish Format,then tells me that Disc L cannot be formatted.
Might be I will have to get a new one.

Have you tried the stick in another PC?
You paste by right clicking on the white space in your post as long as you have 'copied' something.

Hi there yes I have tried it in my laptop which is only a few months old but get the same result, I will try now to get some info from the people I bought it off ,I bought of Ebay and I think it came from France will dig into my records and get in touch with them , I have sent a Email to them but no response.
Think I might just give up on it chuck it in the bin.

It's only on the PC with the USB ports set for protection that should write protect the stick - on another PC it should be working.
It sounds like a bad stick.

Yea I think there is some of the hardware in the stick that is stuffed, because I have a exterior hard drive plugged in to the same hub and it has no problem.

That memory stick doesn't have a 'write protect' switch on, does it?
I've never seen one, but they seem to be around.

Hi I finally got a pic in, this is what I get when I check the drive properties, and no It has not got a switch ,I checked that frist up as I have a stick with one on.

See if this HP utility does anything.
Before running the program, make sure there are no other external hard drives plugged in - just in case you format the wrong drive.

I got a reply back from Ebay and they are going to get the manufacture details for me so I might get it replaced or fixed as most have 2 year warranty. Will let you know what transpires.
