Fat Ps2 Laser cost ??? (urgent)

guys my fat ps2 has some problems...they r --
1) the disc tray dosent open, when i press the eject button then the blue light keeps on flashing but the disc tray dosent come out, the disc tray motor dosent run too..
2)i guess my laser had almost died, it dosent read many type of discs like,,, ps1 backups + PS2 backups + audio cd(displays the tracks but dosent play them, infact freezes after about 2 secs of playback)+ DVD video (same prob as ACD)

MY FAT PS2 IS HAVING MAGIC3 MODCHIP RUNNING IN IT..

when i showed the console to my local dealer he said.. there is problem with the LASER and DISC TRAY CONTROLLING IC and they need to be replaced...
and the cost of this replacement would be around 75USD..

is it true that it costs 75bucks???

if thats the case i guess its better to add a few more dollars and buy a new PS2...

That would sound about right I'm thinking.

If you think what the cost of new laser is, plus the disc tray parts or new drive.
I repair my own so I don't pay those prices, but I have paid $45 for laser.
I was lucky once and picked up 3 used FAT PS2 on ebay for like $15
That was some time ago.

You can buy new ps2 for $130 these days. Get a new modchip in it.
Or if you shop around and get a good used slim V14 and up.

The Fat ps2 is just nice to have for a hdd if you have one.

thanks for the help....
i think i should go for a new console, but loved the fat one, it looks better than the slim :)
and yes i dont use hdd on my ps2 so that expansion bay was no use to me...

MORE QUESTIONS..
1)is it safe to play ps2 games copied on blank dvds ONLINE???? actually i have some games copied on blank dvdrs which support online gaming.. actually i downloaded them and copied on the blank dvdrs...so is it safe????
2)can PS2 read Rewritable-CDs and Rewritable-DVDs

AND SORRY FOR THE LATE REPLY AS I M CURRENTLY BUSY WITH MY STUDIES...

To play backups online you need to patch the DNAS id

Just go this thread of sticky's and look at the "updated NTSC Updated DNAS list"

Oh sorry, missed that second question.
Only some PS2 are capable of reading RW discs, but even if it can those discs are very hard on the laser.

You would only want to test something that way, then burn it too proper discs to save your laser.

actually my fat PS2 has never read a Rewritable disc... but i have heared a few people talking about playing rewritable discs on the console..

no problem.. yes I hear of people doing it also.

But they are putting a lot of strain on their lasers in doing so.

Each laser is different so could be in the later ps2 slims, it is not quite as bad, but still it does wear it down more than normal DVD-R's
