I've ripped this with DVDShrink 3.17b4 and for the first time .. I've got pixelation on A.I. (title).

There is no pixelation on my PC while played... only on my standalone. I have a panasonic and all other movies ever copied have never done this...

All other media from that spindle worked flawlessly.

Any comments / suggestions ?

Regards,
CK

In my experience..AI is a long film with a large ripped file size. If you had used Pinnacle instantcopy you wouldnt have got pixellation. Shrink is good for short movies..but that's about it...to be honest.
You could try a "deep analysis" on AI to see if it improves things.

Thanks for your reply Brian100,

Yup it is a long film. I always use "Deep Analysis" whenever I need to do compression. The weird thing is that it works without pixelation on the PC. My DVD standalone player has never failed me in the past on copied DVD's, and I've copied a ton.

I'm just wondering what would cause this.. it's the first time I've come across an inconsistency of this sort.

I use Nero 6 as my burning tool.

CK

I would have thought that the pixelation is present on your PC aswell..but without seeing it myself i can't say.It may be worth you trying to pick up a copy of Pinnacle Instantcopy version "7", then using the Hidden settings editor with it. The hidden settings editor allows you to tweak the settings of pinnacle. I use this method on all long movies IE over 2 hours, or if the ripped file size is over 6 gig. I backed up my copy of AI with dvd2one, way back, and the results were quite terrible. Pinnacle will give you a far better image quality in general. I have never had pixelation problems with pinnacle, even on films over 3 hours long.
I wouldnt have thought it was a media problem, but hey, I am her to be proven wrong.

Give it a try, you may be surprised

Hi Brian100,

I keep going back to the fact that it works flawlessly on the PC.. so it's probably not a DVDshrink issue. It's most likely a burn issue or perhaps a bad media disk. In any event.. I've used DVDecrypter to rip it.. and now I'll see about putting it on DVD.

Thanks again for your reply.

I also got the brief pixelation when I backed up Saving Private Ryan. I am beginning to think that it has to do with the newer versions of Shrink being in 'Beta" status. I have also backe up a ton of dvd's and never had the problem before. I'll probably wait until the next beta version or final version come sout and retry it.

I have not seen any pixelation on mine, and I did a deep analysis. The only thing that I noticed about this beta version is that, although my rippin times are still about 45 minutes, my burn times have reduced from 60-75 minutes, down to 12 minutes! All previous versions of DVDShrink and XCopy Platinum had real long burn times. I don't know what they did with this version of DVDShrink, but I am not updating again. This one works great!

When you burn your dvd's at max speed's your more likely to get error's, such as pixelation's. I personally like to burn them at 2.4 speed. I would rather have good quality and do it once than speed and pixelation's. try patience and a beer-it all worksout in the end ;)

Slowing the burn speed down may help as well as different media. I burned Aliens 2 special edition using Shrink 3.1.7b5 and Nero. The pixelation and freezing got pretty bad towards the end. I burned the disc at 8x using Memorex -R media.

I used DVD Infopro to check it for read errors, none were found, so then I ran it through Nero's CD-DVD check tool and could see the glitches in the graph line.
This may be a media issue but my original was a bit beat up and that may be transfering to the copy.

These errors only show up when I play the disc in my PS2.
It plays normally in my computer drive and cheap DVD player. Each drive and player has a certain amount of error correction capability which varies between them, the PS2 is a little less capabible than the others.

Im really confoosed with this problem. Are we talking about pixelation, ie macro blocking or image break up? Ie similar to a naffed dirty disk?

Not so much......notice that they tested DVD Shrink 1.3.1 It's bound to have issues. DVD Shrink version 3.1.7 is the current version. So the test is either old or askewed. So no it doesn't upset me as DVD Shrink user.

Looks like the first dvdshrink "user" has got a bit uppety..shame its so badly rated in the test.

Free aint always the best mate...looks like they tested shrink version 3.1..they also tested recode..which has only been out a month.

To each his own, I do think free is best. I'm a student and I don't have cash to be throwin around at several different programs. In fact, if I wanted to take the time I wouldn't have to pay for any. But I won't do that as I don't require a pristine 16 gig HD TV quality back up of my dvd's. If it looks good on my 40" Sony Wega HD TV then it works and so far DVD Shrink has done it's job. I'm loyal to the people who care and the creators of DVD Shrink are constantly upgrading, rewriting, retesting, and adding things to the program which tells me that, besides the program being awesome already, they are committed to making the program perfect for free. Because eventually all this pay software is going to be banned and made illegal even without CSS decryption. Then what will we have? Only the free software and when that happens I'll already know about the quality of and already have DVD Shrink.

Also, let me repeat: I'm not 'uppety' or upset I'm merely stating my humble opinion. Mate. I'm not disagreeing that the others are just as good or better. I just like DVD Shrink.

Well if we look at what happened to dvdxcopy in the courts. The next logical software under suspicion will be shrink. After all it does rip, decrypt & transcode in one package. My personal favourite pinnacle isnt able to backup "copy protcted" disks, although everyone knows how easy that is to get around.

Did you notice in the tests how similar the shrink & recode results were?..interesting eh?

I am a bit suspicious of them results actually. The original & the Intervideo images looked identical..me smells a big rat here. Perhaps that forum has some ..well sponsors..if you get my drift. They are taking the piss basically. I downloaded Intervideo dvd copy and tried it on my copy of JFK..its a long film (over 3 hours & the file size is well over 7gigs). I compared the results from Pinnacle, shrink & intervideo. The Pinnacle was the best, followed by shrink. Intervideo was dead last. I am going to join that "forum" and tell em they are conning the public..

I greatly admire the author of DVDshrink, his product is brilliant and good luck for you in choosing it. I started off with DVD2one way back...and thought it was the dooglies. Then i went to shrink...then pinnacle version 7 (by the way it's better than version 8).I bought pinnacle for £10..a bargain. I admit it's slow..infact bloody slow..but it delivers.

Once again the STAR has returned to the seen ( please take as many photo's as needed ). The reason for pixelation is the speed you are burning at and possibly the blank's your using, I use memorex+r when I recorde and I haven't had a problem. But when i do get pixelation's is when I burn at max speed, try burning the same movie at a lower speed and see the result's. Also what type of blank disc (also called media) are you using?

" What and how do you get to the hidden settings editor? I took everyones suggestion and bought Pinnacle Instant Copy "7". I am courious about the hidden settings.

Thanks

You can read about the history of the "Hidden settings editor" for pinnacle 7 at :-

www.dvdrbase.com

You may also want to check out the excellent tool "dvd stripper" while you are there. It's highly recommended.

A quick search on google will also help you out

Yikes... I never intended this to turn into a century debate of "Whose the daddy of encoding" . But it's been interesting watching the debate and I see validity in each post. Suffice to say that I'm sure we all respect each other's encoder and opinions.

But to get to the subject of the thread.. I just wanted you guys to know that I burned it again.. and guess what ? Yup.. the pixelation is all gone !

Looks like it was bad media after all.. :)

Thanks for the posts and happy burning.

Geestar: I always burn at 2X. I've burnt in excess of 800 DVD blanks so I can rule out that as being the reason I got pixelation. But thanks anyway. :)

Regards,
CK

There are similarities in Recode and DVD Shrink because they are authored by the same guy, believe it or not. If I'm not mistaken, he began writing Shrink then later was hired to do Recode 2 or something of that sort.---
