What I am using:
1. Windows Media Center 2005
2. Xbox360
3. DVD Decryptor
4. VOB2MPEG
5. Harmony 880 Remote.

I rip my DVD using DVD Decryptor. Making sure that I don't split the video (I would like to have only 1 file at the end of this process). I followed the directions on this site precisely:

http://www.smorty71.com/2006/02/watch-ri...r-xbox-360.html

Once the 2 files are finished ripping (It creates two), I enter the VOB2MPEG program and select the source folder containing the files. Once that converts, a single .mpg is created containing the DVD in its full quality. The problem is that the video ether contains subtitles, or it contains audio commentary from the films creators.

There really is no (obvious) option(s) in ether DVD Decryptor VOB2MPEG to turn this off. And using Harmony 880 Remote (It's fully updated with all Xbox360 control options), doesn't have any options to access any sort of "Disable Audio Commentary" menu/option.

How can I disable these two interchangeable events? Do I need to re-encode? If so, how can I avoid this once I begin encoding once more?

Those must be old movies, DVD Decrypter hasn't been updated in ages. You could probably use this (old) guide substituting for the update to DVDFabHDDecrypter and use it's main movie feature or DVD Shrink if you wish to edit, VobBlanker too but it's more complicated. The ImgBurn step won't be needed: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/334154

I looked through the link you gave me and I'm a little confused. So your saying I should purchase DVDFab HD Decrypter and use that? Do I need all of those other programs to get a perfect 1:1 copy of my DVD in an Xbox360 readable format (I'm assuming it can only read .wmv).

No. they're all free. Basically all you should need is DVDFabDecrypter or DVDDecrypter (if it will remove the encryption-probably not on newer movies) and DVD Shrink. Again, both are free, there is a paid version of DVDFab but you don't need it. Don't know anything of XBox. Edit: this should be a link to DVDFabHDDecrypter, DVDfab Platinum is the payware, you don't want it: http://www.dvdfab.com/free.htm

I already had DVDFab Platinum, but the resolution always looked like this:

Now I know that the Aspect Ratio gets readjusted when its played back on my TV, but it still looked smushed (it didn't with the older tools). Also, the DVD Quality seemed quite poor in comparison to what I had before. Before, the Rip was a near perfect 1:1 copy of the DVD. Now it looks like some TV show broadcast in SD. Not to mention with DVDFab Platinum, a 5GB Rip takes almost 2 hours! With those (older) tools I was using before, the whole process took 30-40 minutes! Is there even an option to keep the DVD 1:1? Or MUST it be compressed? The quality slider stops at 4000MB.

Is there a way to fix any of this with that program? This is why I never used it after I purchased it, I haven't been able to figure that out and resorted to other programs.

PS: I believe the Xbox has the ability to view MP4 formats as well (if that matters to anyone).

Don't use either so don't know but a Rip shouldn't be poorer quality or change the Aspect ratio. Is there a quality setting (compression?) and maybe the Widescreen (16.9) or Fullscreen (4.3) resolution is selected wrong? Ripping should only take 15-20 min., maybe someone that uses the program should chime in. Edit: sound's like it's being compressed to fit on regular DVD, if it doesn't do a 1:1 in full quality, that's not good, main movie only should be good quality.

Well I've got my hands in the air on this one. If there is a program that can do this all in 15-20 minutes, give me the name of that program and I will go out and buy it within minutes. This 2 Hour conversion time for a crappy quality DVD Rip is a waste of my time. Thats why I never used DVDFab and to my knowledge, I'm not missing any specific compression options. I just need a 1:1 copy of the DVD put onto a MP4 or WMV so my Xbox360 can play it on my Windows Media Center. This is seeming to get increasingly more and more difficult by the day.

I just use AnyDVD to Rip a disk and thought it took that amount of time, maybe a few minute's longer but definitely not 2 hours or poorer quality. That's for Ripping time only. Don't know but those program's I mentioned should do what you want but so should DVDFab Platinum, can't see a freeware program doing better than the same manufacturer's payware program for the same thing.

Would I need another program on top of AnyDVD in order to convert it into a .mp4 or .wmv? If so, what would do the best job without taking 2 hours?

Forgive me if I misunderstood you, but were you suggesting I use AnyDVD to rip the DVD and DVDFab to convert it? But wouldn't that conversion take hours too? Since it currently takes that long to rip/convert the DVD using the DVDFab program. Not to mention I'll have to deal with the quality issues I'm still having with the program.

So:
-15-20 Minutes ripping time using AnyDVD.
-Then another how long to get it into .mp4 or .wmv using what program? This was done in under 40 minutes (total) using old programs, theres gotta be something out there thats the same if not better.

AnyDVD is a payware program to remove copyright protection and can be used to Rip the disk to Harddrive first too. Think it also uses FixVTS too. DVDFabHDDecrypter and FixVTS do pretty much the same thing in more step's but are free. DVD Shrink (free) will let you remove any extra's from a Rip. There is a trial for AnyDVD, 21 day's I believe, and a yearly update charge. After ripping and editing, carry on with Vob2MPEG as you were. Anyway, you wouldn't use both AnyDVD and DVDFab, one or the other. Not aware of vob to wmv converter's but there must be plenty. Edit: have heard of this but that's all. Apparently converts: http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/ plenty of other's.

VOB2MPG's MPG files are not readable by Windows Media Center.

The AnyDVD program worked quite well at ripping the VOB Sets/Files. Now I just need a FAST high quality recommended VOB fileset(s) to (a single) WMV file converter.

Many converters I've tried require a single VOB rather than a folder full. I didn't see any options in the AnyDVD ripper to condense all the files into one..so I dunno what to do.

I'm stretching here but what about using freeware to convert your Vob2MPEG file to wmv for now, if that's even possible. I'm sure there is an easier way but I don't know it.

There don't seem to be that many, have a look at http://www.dvd-wmv.com/ or http://www.mydvdtools.com/dvd-to-wmv-converter.htm (not free though.

AnyDVD Ripper: 20 Minutes.
Vob2MPEG: 30 Minutes.
Converting MPG to WMV: 1 Hour, 40 Minutes.
Total Time: 2 Hours 30 Minutes for one movie, using 3 programs.

Just tried that. Its still wayyyyy too long. When I used the old programs only took 40 minutes for EVERYTHING but kept the Commentary and Subtitles. If old tech can do it, I'm sure new tech can too.

There's gotta be something. Perhaps its something with the bitrate. I'd like the bitrate to be basically the same as the DVD, is there a recommended bitrate or a way to find out what the DVDs is?

(I've got 2 PCs by the way, so I'm able to multitask these programs).

edit: I just downloaded a program called "Any DVD Converter", and to Rip the DVD and encode to WMV, will take 3.5 hours PLUS - according to this program. I'm sure the 4000 bitrate contributes to this, but I don't want the original bitrate compressed at all. I need a 1:1 version of the DVD in WMV.

As far as I know, ripping doesn't affect the Bitrate at all, compressing will. Sometime's newer isn't better. Don't know but if there's a way, someone here will know it. That 4000 has to be adjustable, kind of defeat's the purpose of a Dual Layer disk. I think DVD has a maximum Bitrate of 9800.

Heard a lot of good thing's about Xilisoft, maybe a way to convert on the fly and cut out the ripping: http://www.xilisoft.com/dvd-to-wmv-converter.html

While waiting for the file to work, I tried this:
1. Ripped the DVD using AnyDVD Ripper.
2. Used DVD Shrink to downsize it to one VOB.
3. Renamed the VOB .MPG and it worked perfectly!

BUT: The COMMENTARY was still there. This is what I did with DVD Shrink:

1. I rendered it with all audio off but the first one: The director was talking in the backround.
2. I rendered it with all audio off but the third one: I heard the actors talking.
3. I rendered it with all the audio off but the forth one: I heard a bunch of different people talking.
4. I rendered it with ALL of the audio OFF. The video was silent, with NO sound effects.

The PREVIEW window in DVD Shrink had audio and everything was FINE with NO commentary.... This just doesn't make sense to me.

I guess its interesting though, simply renaming the single composed VOB file .MPG worked... So if I can eliminate the commentary, it would eliminate the need to encode in another format, saving me hours of time.

Doesn't make sense to me either and I won't be much help, only used Shrink a few time's year's ago. Is this with every movie with comment's or just this one? Be worth trying another to see what happen's with it's audio. Seem to remember having this problem with the director's comment's but it was just a matter of wrong audio choice. I see there are 2 titles there, sometime's there are 2 complete set's, 1 with director's comment's and 1 for the regular movie.

Yea the Title (2) was a second copy of the file I had in the queue. So its the original DVD.

The program you suggested will take 4.5 hours to rip and convert. So I may end up taking some time to come up with a short and concise thread with some different questions as this one has gone way off from its original post and I doubt most will follow this all the way through.

Kinda curious about this so I downloaded a trial of DVDFab Platinum to see how it worked. Both it and AnyDVD will make a 1-1 copy of a video (Full disc or clone) in about the same time (exact same size in both) so you don't need AnyDVD. In DVDFab Platinum, ensure DVD 9, DVD 5 compress's, is selected (lower left), DVD 5 set's the quality setting around 4000. I also used it to make a wmv but it took over 2 1/2 hour's. I used high quality in conversion setting's which increase's the time as 2 pass is used but if viewed on a small screen, I doubt you'll see any difference. Unchecked everything but the movie and 1 audio track and upped audio bitrate to 192. Not sure on video bitrate, default seem's as good as 6000, not sure on file size either, you'll have to experiment with those. Resolution was just chosen closest to the original (advanced setting's) shown at the top and looked fine. I really didn't have time to check it out, manual should have info. Main movie will probably be better, the rest is a lot of info I wondered about renaming, anyway try it out, if it work's you won't even need DVD Shrink.

Wellp I think I finally got a system worked out that works.

1. Ripping: AnyDVD
2. Encoding: DVD Shrink. (Made 15 VOB files 1 non-compressed file).
--Haven't tried using DVDShrink for both the ripping and encoding yet.
3. VOB2MPG to convert the single VOB file into .MPG.
--Simply renaming the encoded VOB to MPG did not work with WMC, but using this program to rename it worked perfectly.

So during this process there really was no converting file formats other than from VOB to MPG but I don't know if that counts lol, considering the conversion takes like 6 minutes.

In total, the whole process takes about 30-35 minutes. Is that about average or still too long?

I would think that's very good time, ripping alone is nearly 20 minutes and longer to backup at 4x, but as long as you're happy with it, that's all that matter's anyway. Speaking of which, don't think newer DVD's will rip with DVD Shrink alone, hasn't been updated in over 2 year's.
