I've had a the same trouble with my newly purchased Dell 8300 desktop.

The TEAC DV-W58E will happily write to a Verbatim DVD+RW but nothing doing with Panasonic DVD-Rs.

Having read previous messages I now understand there is a difference between -R and +R. Goodbye £40 for 20 coasters. Grrr.

Anyhow, I also did the firmware upgrade and the slave/master thing as discussed previously but still nothing doing with the Panasonic DVD-R disks. "No disk in the drive reported by Sonic MYDVD".

So I went out and bought a pack of Philips DVD+R and one of Imation DVD+R (both 4.7GB).

Not sure about the Imation but the Philips are supposedly 8X although I don't have a clue what speed the drive actually ran at.

I have just burnt 4.4GB successfully though in around 40 minutes if that provides a clue.

The other media types supposed to be ok with this drive are (all DVD+R):

BestMedia Platinum 8x
Infiniti 4x & 8x
Memorex 4x and 4x DVD+RW
Philips 4x (I have 8x and they worked)
TDK 4x

Hope this all helps...

i have the same problem. Bought new Dell dimension. My TEAC DV-W58E drive cannot read game DVD's. I have tried Unreal Tournament 2004, Far Cry and Deus Ex: Invisible war games now, all cause my computer to hang. Drive won't open and Get major blue error screen. Have to reboot in safe mode to release drive door. Fault refers to device driver error? Dell Support say it is the game manufacturers, but three games from different companies?? too coincidental, I think. I have had some success by using explorer to browse disk and install and not my computer. Also turned off autorun on disc. Deactivated DLA on the drive in case that was problem with other software. Have run 32-bit diagnositcs and drive is fine. Is it that the actual disc the manufacturer used to distribute these games cannot be read by this drive? Or is it a software problem, ie sonic or record now etc. I am at a loss now, the support from dell is cr*p. I feel the drive is useless bar playing cd-roms. Even burning those recently, my computer cannot read certain manufacturer's media. Anyone any ideas??

I have had a lot of luck burning +R DVD's using Ritek +R 8X (RITEK-R03-01)media with DVD Decryptor; but NO luck burning any brand of +R media with Sonic RecordNow or InterVideo's WinDVD. Dell just keeps telling me to uninstall/reinstall the software (which DOES NOT HELP)! Is there really a chance that physically switching the drives will work?

I am having the same problem as originally stated. Even got my drive to totally lock up. Had to use the magic paperclip hole to force it open so I could get the blank DVD out. I too called Dell technical support and the guy told me that the discs I was using (Verbatim DVD-R's) were not compatible with the drive (which sounds pretty stupid to me). So I asked him to tell me what brand to use because I don't want to keep buying DVD's that aren't going to work. He told me to use Sony, but didn't tell me which type to use (DVD-R vs. DVD+R or anything) so I returned the discs I had and got some Sony DVD-R's at CompUSA. Well guess what?! Those don't work either!

When I bought this computer I really had no clue about the difference of DVD's as compared to CD's. I still don't see (maybe I should say I don't understand) why it matters if you have a + RW drive that you should have to buy +R or +RW media, but hey, I'm willing to give anything a shot. So...like colw stated it definitely pays to do your research before you buy.

I also updated my firmware per the link on the previous page. That didn't do squat. I didn't the a link to the ASPI reference that daviderin made, so I did not do that. Also, since this is a new computer under warranty I am a bit leery about changing jumpers. If I have to call Dell and scream and yell about this I will until I get the results I want and deserve as a customer.

If anyone has any new information on this issue, please do share.

Thanks,
Jess

+ formats are made for this drive and the drive will only write using them so when you buy discs they should have the rw logo.

Thanks David. I think I'm more pissed at myself for not researching the drive before buying, but them's the breaks. I just assumed they would be like the CD drives. We all know what happens when you assume.

Shore did! I have now burned 4, count 'em 4, DVD's. Friggin awesome. However, I may still invest in a dual format drive. Not like they're outrageoulsy expensive these days or anything. :)

I'm really new to all this and the other information has been really helpful. I'm not sure if I'm doing it right though. I have the same king of burner. I use DVDShrink to copy and save to my hard drive, Then I burn the DVDs with the Sonic Record Now! software that came with my Dell. I use the DVD + formats as well. The DVDs play fine on the computer but not in the DVD player that I have - which plays the DVD+ formats and is less than a month old. I see a lot of people are talk8ing about the kinds of medias they use. I have HP Invent (???). Are these cheap? Any suggestions? Am I missing a step? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your time.
