I ripped a dvd by using dvdfab then i converted the 7 .vob using avs video converter into a .avi, the process took about an hour, then the .avi file came out but it was somewhat bad quality. Then i tried again after modifying the output settings for better quality, this process took about 9 hours (which i was kind of suspicious about but i found out why after it was done), the .avi file ended up being about 16gb however i'ts quality was good.

Here are the settings i used for the output file for the second try:

Size: 740 x 480 pixels
Bit Rate: 2400kbps
Frame Rate: 30 frames/second
Aspect: 720:480
Video Compression: MPEG4 (DivX/XviD Compatible)

Can someone help me make a smaller file (i'm thinkin about 1-2gb but less would be great) but with good quality?

An easy way is to use AutoGK.

99% of all problems are between the computer and the chair.

use dvdshrink to backup your vob's into an ISO.

Next download the free fairuse wizard lite. Use fairuse wizard lite to convert your ISO into an avi. The free version will limit your output to a 700mb file. The xvid codec will produce an average looking avi, if you use the h264 codec the quality will be much better even at the 700mb file.

Fairuse only converts ISO, that's why you have to make sure your vob's are inside an ISO. This program has never gave me an audio/sync problem.

I concur with jony218. FairUse Wizard yields great quality AVIs. Last movie I converted was 500Mb using H264, excellent quality for a 90min movie. Good quality compressing with Divx also.

Have to 2nd dialysis1 with AutoGK

free, great results and works with your ripped files.. no need to convert to .iso first.. Very simple to use, your choice of finished file sizes.

And, the only program I've found that will let you adjust the output ratio... (my dvd recorder records 16:9 from the DirecTv dvr, but for some reason the computer sees as 4:3.. AutoGK can over-ride and output the .avi in the correct 16:9 format).

.

Should one want to use FairUse Wizard(I like it best;I can encode to H.264 or Divx/Xvid),there is no need to convert to ISO first, any decent ripper will rip a DVD directly into an ISO.
