I have a Liteon DVDRW-851S with the newest firmware version GC0C. I am was using DVD Shrink 3.05 beta, but just switched to 3.17 beta. I have successfully burned 10 DVD's using Nero 6 after DVD Shrink did its magic. I have also used it on DVD's that I have already burned. The last 2 DVD's I have put in my drive DVD Shrink would not finish because of a cyclic redundancy check error. My friend has a Optorite DVD RW DD0201 and DVD Shrink reads them. (The Rock & Broken Arrow)However I did try 2 other DVD's that I have already burned (The Matrix & Die Another Day)neither of which had any problems. What to do?

The only time i've had crc errors was when my lg cd rw/dvd rom was reading some of the discs. I put the disc in my region free pioneer 106d and they copy fine. At first i thought it was just the drive, but now i suspect some discs have extra protection that requires region free, but that doesn't stand to reason because dvd shrink has it's own region free crack.

You say you have the latest firmware, have you tried one of the rpc1 or 2 firmwares? I'll find the link and post it for you.

Other than that i'm not really sure. Be back.

I'm not sure if they have your drive, don't have time at the mo', but i found the link to the rpc1 forums:
http://forum.rpc1.org/

If this doesn't solve your problem just keep asking, someone here will know.

Here you go, try this;
http://forum.firmware-flash.com/dl_firmware.php?category=4&manufactor=17

LITE-ON DVDRW LDW-851S - GS08, GS0C
Use LtnRPC to reset or disable the Region Counter. Click Disable and your drive will be region free!
RPC-2

Be sure to read the discalimer at the top of the page, all unofficial flashing is done at own risk!!

Here's a direct link to the download, at the bottom of the page, but check that first page out before you do.
http://dhc014.rpc1.org/LtnRPC/

Hope this helps.

CRC can also, and more often is, unreadable media. Try the DVDs in DVD Decrypter on your computer, if it fails it's the media. You have a DVD-ROM to read them from?

Hi capslock2,

CRC errors are caused by the inability of your drive to read a file off the DVD. This is usually caused by dirt and/or scratches. I have had discs that had no apparent damage have this error.

Some readers can handle disc errors better than others.

Heres the definition:

A number derived from, and stored or transmitted with, a block of data in order to detect corruption.
By recalculating the CRC and comparing it to the value originally transmitted, the receiver can
detect some types of transmission errors.

This just says that a number is first transmitted along with the block of data, then a number derived from the block of data itself is then compared to the original number.

The first thing to try is a through cleaning of the disc in question.

I agree with most of whats been said here, today I got my first Cyclic error with a Pioneer 106D and its with an old JAY & SILENT BOB Strikes Back DVD its in poor condition. Now I slamme dit in my cheap as chips DVD CDRW combo and it works fine. So it can be a combination of the reader and the DVD media I would assume that the Pioneer 106D has a lower tolerance to bad media. It a great drive and I would assume the lower tolerance is a feature for greater accuracy or something rather than it being a bad thing.
So all I can add is if you can get a cheap as DVD Rom drive it may help you to get over the cyclis errors on old discs.

hi capslock2,
as always fastfrank is very acurate in pinpointing the prob( no disrespect frank) another way to check the prob is if you d/load cd check ,a little program in the software section. This is a cheaper solution than buying 321 studio's dvdx rescue. Both programs can read your disc and will tell you if it is the actual disc which may have a damaged VOB file etc. However dvdx rescue is the only program i have been able to find that can recover damaged files and back them up to your harddrive and then let you reburn on to another disc. Its a trial this problem and i see a few people have given you some sound advise ,hopefully one of the solutions fixes your problem

Although I haven't used this, I've read good things about it's data recovery capabilities:
