I wish to back up a few dvd's I have to this format but I'm not sure which softwares allow me to do that.

you should try Megui and convert to mp4/H264. Here's some info:

Alternatively, ffdshow has an H.264 encoder, you can encode
that from Virtualdub and keep the movie as an avi.
