I have a Lite-On 16X DVD burner(updated firmware). I have backed up a lot of DVD's with it over the last year since I bought it. I mostly use Sony media and have never had an issue with the media or burner in the past.
Recently, however, every single DVD I backup and then play back to verify freezes at various spots and resumes and even sometimes freezes and wont resume playback. I've tried playing the copied media in a DVD player and on my actual PC and get the same results.
Is my burner on it's way out? I have not tried "cleaning" it, but as cheap as burners are these days, I have no problem forking out a little cash for a new one if that is what the professionals here recommend.
Thanks.

Does the freezing during play occur at the same spot everytime you play the dvd or is the location of the freezing random?

The freezing is random. I've tried copying the same DVD twice and freezing occurs at different spots on the copied DVD.

Could you outline the process you use to make these backups, or provide a burn log for a recent burn that has these freezes in it?

Not sure about a log file, but here is my process which has not changed.
1. Rip DVD VOB files to HD using DVD Fab(most recent version). Movie only compressed to 4.7gb.
2. Burn VOB files to DVD using ImgBurn.
note: I Have also tried the slowest burn settings as well. No multitasking going on at all. No screensaver, no antivirus or spyware scan or any thing at all going on while I burn.
Also, my source HDD(SATA) or my USB External Drive and DVD(IDE) writer are all on different channels. Always have been.

There is no option in my DVD Shrink program to backup as ISO.
MID - Manufacturer ID: SONY16D1
EDIT: Oops my fault. I had no idea there was a newer version of DVD Shrink out there. I thought I had the latest. Backing up to ISO image now.

Isn't DVD Shrink Free?? I've never paid for it and here is the free download.

I had version 3.1 and was under the impression that development of that program had ceased.

Well, after about 35 1/2 coasters...1/2 cause I snapped one in anger, I believe the problem is fixed by utilizing your process.
I am out of media now, so I will have to wait until tomorrow to make backups of the rest of the DVDs I have left to do. So far, 2 for 2 on DVD's that were previously skipping.
I'll keep you guys posted.
