New DVD 8X +-R Burner 8x, Liteonit.
Xcopy 4.0.3.8

The Media I used was Memorex +R.

At first, I thought maybe it was the DVD Burner, but it plays the original fine.

I used the Xpress way to make a DVD copy....took about 1 hour or so for the Harry Potter Movie (that I have, original, non-rented)...(not to savvy with settings though)...

Anyway, it doesn't copy the menu system, just the movie and scenes....however, the movie stalls and is thus unstable.

Anyone know what I did wrong? Perhaps?

Thanks

Did you check "Entire disk"?
Try different media for the "stalls" problem

hey

just a suggestion but most of the people on this forum use -R for movies (me included), that could be a problem

but Ni4ni's suggestion was very right did u check "entire Disk" mode?

and one more thing thats nagging at the back on my mind well a two parter

does it play well in your DVD Player? (the one on your tv)

and

Does it do it all the time or only this one time?

have u tryed it before? (how new are you to the prog)

and one more thing (lol, i know i am asking a lot of questions) just a little question but were u running any antivirus or firewall services at the time?

ok, first, I will try -R discs today and I did not check the entire disk....so I will try that too.

Also, it's as a Slave drive, but does anyone's computer SLOW to a crawl when burning? i.e. you can't do anything else (browse internet, etc)? I had this problem with CDR burning too.

will let you know how the next one turns out..

thanks

You really should not be using anything on the computer while burning.

When you are burning make sure you have everything else turned off, go into msconfig and shut down unnecessary applications.
Burning DVDs uses lots of your computer's resources and it should be left alone during the process.

also, is xcopy the best to use? Will there be future updates? I thought they couldn't sell it anymore.

Also, this is going to sound dumb, as I think I know the anwser, but is the DVD copy-back up screen part of the attempt to appease the entertainment business? If so, if there are rulings against xcopy, shouldn't they take off that screen and say, well the heck with it then? (grin)..

PS, have you noticed we see commercials now at the movies? I didn't pay for that.

I have Xcopy but never use it, I don't care for the warning and the tracking data that gets put on the disc. I also like to see whats going on and have a bit more control. Other than that I think its a quality product.

They can sell the portion that does the compression and burning, they just won't be able to provide a decryption feature. I think they can remove the warnings as their products can't copy encrypted movies anymore.
They got a lot of work to do if they want to compete directly with Ahead and the others. I hope people don't lose jobs.

They won't be able to sell their castrated version for the same price either.

OK, well I tried it again with -R type, and "complete" disk checked (Chicago-7.x gigs) and it played back fine on the PC, although I wasn't to sure about the quality, I thought it looked a little pixelated.

Sure enough, when I put it in my Panasonic DVD Player (less than one year old), it stalled, and was pixelated.

It would not play in the PS2.

The only things left to try (with Xcopy anyway) are::
1) try it again with +R and complete disc checked....
2) try a different media..(actually the +R that I will try tom., will be a different brand.

any other suggestions??

PS, for the most part, I think I have most of the neccesary "background" services off, etc.

Here's what I do:
1. Run Enditall http://home.ptd.net/~don5408/toolbox/enditall/
2. Disable Internet access (ZoneAlarm)
3. Turn off anti-virus program
I always get a good quality burn.

Thanks, I looked at this program and I don't see that windows XP can be used...does enditall work?

Anyway, do you think it's the media? Does Xcopy work to make a qualitty burn?? When do they have to stop making it with the ripper?

Also, are there other programs that work? Does Ahead Nero work, I have Nero but have never tried the dvd copy section.

You don't think it's the burner do you ? Liteonit, 811S, 8X DVD +-R, RW.

thanks again

Enditall works fine with XP. Xcopy works finebut you need a ripper with the RF version. I use DVD43.
You can use DVD Shrink with Nero, that works good also.

I see from your original post that your burner is 8x. Are you trying the burns with 8x media?

If so I would suggest slowing down. There have been a lot of problems reported trying to burn at fast speeds. Even if the burn is sucessful, many set top players can't read a disc burned at 4x or faster. Remember, slow and steady.

Also keep in mind the Xpress copies just the movie only. You can select a soundtrack and wide or full screen but that's it. There is a good chance that your poor quality picture is being caused by over compression as HP is a large movie.

let us know what happens,
max

No, all media has been 4X.

Also, the last movie I tried (4X, and used -R, Xpress), was "Chicago".

Using XPRESS and checking ENTIRE disc burned the complete disc WITH MENU, SCENE, etc. Plays fine on PC DVD, but pixealated, stalled on Panasonic high end DVD player, as well as DID NOTHING on PS2.

So, any other suggestions, before attempting to copy another movie????

thanks

OK, am trying DVD Shrink now (doesn't seem to technical at all...), so we'll see how that goes....removed a few things (from Monsters) think that the compression is 53%.

I should use Nero to burn? Or can Shrink do this?

Also, since most dvd have the dual layer, (7.xx gigs) there is no way ((yet)) to burn a full DVD to another DVD right with ZERO compression?? It's something like EMPTY space to impeed DVD backups.

I will try Xpress again, once someone suggests some other way...

Ways done so far...
I.
Movie: H. Potter II
MEDIA +R,
4X, Speed (Using Xpress, didn't choose burn speed, so am unsure....
Complete Disc NOT checked.
Result: Movie skipped, stalled, in both PC and DVD player.

II.
Movie: Chicago
MEDIA -R
4X, Speed (Using Xpress, didn't choose burn speed, so am unsure....
Complete Disc WAS checked
Result: Movie played fine on PC DVD, but stalled and pixelated on Panasonic DVD.

III. Presently using shrink DVD, removed anything needed to make it NON-RED.
Will use Nero to burn, unless I hear otherwise in the next few minutes.
Media Burned will be -R

thanks

Memorex...

Will use Nero to burn to DVD-R Memorex from DVD Shrink files.

I also have one DVD +R (4X) Imation....will try that next.

Then, I will try other medias...

Not much to choose from at local stores (best buy, circuit city......, TDK, Imation, Memorex...)

Oppps, nevermind, Shrink is burning the disc directly after placing all the files in my directory (nice)...didn't expect that. If asked automatically for a disc to write to, I chose all the correct options as well, 30mm, slow, etc.

will see what happens, then will try Nero if that fails.

errr, slow meaning 4X

Hi again,

Shrink is using your installed Nero to burn automatically.

54% compression is a lot. Try and reduce it. The bigger the number the less compression.

OK, found a way that worked....at least for one (non-PC dvd player).....

Not sure if shrink would have done the whole job, as during the WRITE part, I made the mistake of opening a window which made it stop.

Anyway, I used SHRINK to rip the file, then placed the TS files in the proper directory using Nero. All went smooth and it plays back perfect on a AMPEX DVD player. It did not play on an older DVD player, although, this older DVD player gives us problems to being with.

I used the -R format, at X4 speed.
and made all the recommended changes per shrink.
The media was still Memorex.

Still have to try it in the PC.

Thanks for the help, hope this helps someone else out.

Also, FWIW (for what it's worth), the compression via shrink was about 52%, for the most part you can't tell unless your looking for it (or trained), however, I noticed that the movie "Monsters Inc" ripped both the Wide Screen and FULL screen. I'm wondering where that setting would have been. Need to look it over, as I could have got a better picture if I picked one format only, correct?!

Still, it's nice to have all the menus, and extras. When we get to dual DVD burners, will we be at NON compression rates, (full 7.x gigs???), or do you think we'll get to the 100 gig opitical drives first and start storing 20 movies per disc?

thanks

:-)

fasfrank, when you say try and reduce it, you mean remove more content correct?

How is it that they (original) are 7.x gigs, is it just a protection scheme?

Didn't know it was using Nero, so I take it that the settings I made in Nero would have been the default anyway? (don't think I changed much of anything....)

I will analyze Monsters again and see if I can find where it had the two formats (WIDE vs FULL). What else can you take out? There seemed to be quite a bit more than the shrink tutorial screen shots.

Ahh-haa, found the WIDE vs FULL screen under MAIN MOVIE.

Wide=Title 1
FULL=Title 10

However, there is no way to UNSELECT the full screen within SHRINK unless I'm missing something?!

There is an easy way to select the different screens, audio tracks and sub-pictures.

Once the movie has finished encoding, select Re-author.
All the parts of the movie will be displayed on the right. Select the parts you want by dragging them into the compilation window on the left.
Now use your preview screen to play the selected titles. Right click on the preview window and you get a menu, select "full screen" mode to help differentiate between wide and full screen.

Any part that you have added to your compilation window can be removed by right clicking on the undesired title and selecting delete from the menu.

Select "audio" from the preview screen menu to listen to different audio tracks. Check the audio box that corresponds to the one you want.

When you use the re-author mode the menu will not work.
