I've been lurking the forums for the info I need, but haven't been able to find any subject on the matter exactly.

What is the (best) way to rip DVDs into a single container-file with no loss of quality at all?
I've tried using Handbrake, wrapping the movie in with Matroska using VP3(Theora) and setting the "constant quality" up to a 100%. I'm not complaining about the end result, but the filesize reached 5.6gig and the source DVD only contained 4.7, which struck me as weird.
I don't really care about the filesize, but if encoding it in theora reduces the quality of the movie, I might as well replace it with something else.

I'd like to keep both English and Danish subtitles optional, removing other translations and additional audio-tracks.

I sadly don't know much about this, but if anyone of you could give me a few pointers, it'd be hugely appreciated :)

What are you trying to do? Just rip the movie? The entire disc? And what do you plan to do with it - burn it to another disc, play it on your PC, etc?

I'm trying to "rip DVDs into a single container-file with no loss of quality at all" for playback via mplayer on a Linux box. I don't know what the difference would be from ripping the movie and the entire disc tho.

Well, if you rip the entire disc, you'll get menus and everything, along with the main movie. If you just get the movie... well, you'll get just the movie.

I can't be too sure, but I believe you can find some threads around here asking about ripping the DVD's contents and stuff.

That part's pretty easy, and you can find it anywhere.

As for playing it on mplayer, though... well, if you straight rip the video from the DVD, then you should end up with a .vob file, and I believe mplayer can play .vob files given you understand the following:

I dunno very little about Linux and even less about mplayer, so I won't be able to help you with the actual playback part. But I know there are a lot of programs out there that can do a straight DVD rip of the movie.

Sorry, hope that helps.

I had no idea I could use menus inside a media container, but I actually just want the movie and subtitles :). mplayer plays everything so that's REALLY not an issue.

But are you saying I can just rip movies into a single .vob file, that holds everything I'd want? I've been trying to find such an application, that just rips directly without compression.

I'm sure I've just got the wording wrong, but the only thing I can find, is some that rips a movie down to a single-layer dvd compatible size, or into smaller divx's or whatever type-files.
Got any specific one I could use, by any chance?

A whole DVD, menus and all, in one container? My bad, I forgot about that. No, there's no way to put it all into one container to play.

...unless you rip the DVD into an ISO. All that is is just a disc image, which is more or less a "virtual disc." I'm not sure how well mplayer would handle it, though.

But as far as ripping from a DVD9 to DVD5, I'm sure there are ways... lessee...

Slysoft has software that's very good at that - CloneDVD and AnyDVD. They're both products you have to buy, but there's a free trial version you can get. CloneDVD's the best one I've used so far. There are others, but none that I can remember off the top of my head.

And for DivX... there are some more guides here at aD that can help you out with that, too. Me, I keep with the stuff that's on a hard drive, which is easier for me personally. Again, I don't know too much about DVD ripping.

Well actually I don't want to downgrade the quality by going to DVD5, I just want a single playable file, without any loss of quality. DVDshrink can do that for free anyhow.

Well, I'm not sure about that, then. I know some movies are encoded on both layers, so they might be more than 4.3 GB just by themselves. Try just ripping the main feature to see how big it is.

I'm sure in DVDShrink (or CloneDVD, or whichever it was), you have the option of ripping certain files - including specific subtitle streams and stuff - from your DVD. This will automatically get rid of some of the filesize, because all you'll have is the main movie and the subtitles to go along with it.

There should also be an option to "string" the separate VOB files of the main movie into one single file. I don't know how to do that exactly, but I remember seeing it on here. You could probably find it by searching the forum.

...so yeah, I feel like I'm not really helping you much. All I'm really doing is pointing you in the direction of the search button. Feels kinda lame... :/

You can use DVDShrink to create a single .vob file. Go to Edit==>Preferences==>Output Files==>And "uncheck" the box for Split .vob files into 1 gb chunks.
Then you can choose to re-author the movie doing movie only and no compression. Although this method doesn't really accomplish what you originally stated you wanted ..a container file.
I convert mine to xvid using autogk, which results in an .avi container. I would venture to say that since you are concerned about quality, if you chose to encode with the quality setting in AGK, you would not notice any degradation using 75% or higher. Just my opinion.

Interesting, I actually just mentioned the container cause I thought it necessary. Thought there was some fancy thing going on in the dvd filesystem as with .cda files on an audiocd. I'll be looking into the whole re-author to a single .vob file
