I just received a LiteOn DH-20A4P DVD burner yesterday at my office. After using DVDFab to rip a DVD movie for one user and IMGBurn to copy a bunch of music files for another, I discovered that the resulting DVDs can only be read on certain readers. I'm using Tayo Yuden blank DVD media.

The ripped DVD movie has no problems in my set top box.

I have an LG DVD burner in one of my desktops running Vista and it treats both of the above mentioned DVDs as blank an prompts me to format it. If I try to read the DVD with the music files in the very drive that produced it, nothing happens. I couldn't see the music files at all. But it can see the video files from the ripped DVD movie. Although it takes quite a long time before they are recognized.

Neither the music files nor the movie can be read in an NEC DVD +/-RW drive but it can be read in a Phillips drive.

On the flip side, CD media has no problems on any drive.

I suspect there is something weird about how the data is written to the DVD media that only makes it readable on certain drives.

Has anyone run into this before?

What format are those Taiyo Yudens? Dash?

The philips and another stand alone plays them ok,just something wrong with them that the NEC and LG pc drives don't like.

I'd try the opposite format in the new litey.Liteys love plus format.

When it comes to reading dvd backups, not only the stand alone players may not recognize them, but pc dvd-rom and dvd-rw drives may not be able to recognize backups as well.

Lite-on dvd-rw drives have bitsetting capability to booktype the plus format media to dvd-rom.This will help the compatability of your backups so they can play on more machines. Lite-on uses a separate utility to do that job. I lost the link in last weekend's reformat of my pc. Do a search for Lite-on Booktyping utility.

There's a possibility that ImgBurn may be able to booktype for you. 1)Get some plus format quality media if you haven't already.
2)Open up ImgBurn,click on write.
3)On the right of the screen, you'll see an opened book icon.Hold cursor over it and it'll say "Change Booktype".Click on it.
4) You'll see a bunch of models listed and click the Liteon tab.
5) Change For setting: Set it for dvd +R media
6) New Setting: Set it for Dvd-rom.
7) Click Change button
8) Hopefully a Success window pops up
9) Click OK and another OK after the small popup disappears.

Then the "current setting" should say dvd-rom if it works.

You'll have to reset it if you use +RW or +RDL media.

If it don't work, investigate the liteon booktyping utility and it should fix that compatability issue.

To answer your media question, I'm using Taiyo-Yuden DVD-R media. Oddly, I have a different model Lite-On in my desktop at home and I created the same movie backup using the same DVD-R media and had no problems reading it on either desktop (LG DVD +/-RW & the problematic Lite-On DVD +/-RW) at my office. The Phillips and the NEC readers that are also in a different desktop had no issues either.

If you could not read the disc with the drive that burnt the disc, most likely the drive has a problem reading. Can the drive read any DVD disc?

You may want to try Nero Disk Speed (Free Tool) to check your drive and the disk.

I just replaced the Lite-On iHAP122-04 8 with an LG GH22NP20 this morning. After burning the same music files on the DVD-R media, I was able to read it on my other desktop with no problems. The ripped DVD movie also played with no problems.

So I'm going to chalk it up to some quirk about the Lite-On and DVD-R media. We don't have any DVD+R media so I was not able to test it. To answer your question though, the drive could read a DVD+R that I borrowed so that may confirm the post that said Lite-Ons like DVD+R media.

Exchanging the drives seems to have soved the problem. I just have to send the other one back.

It may play that plus format backup from another person, but someone else handing you a plus backup,it may not. Getting backups to be recognized because they are tougher to read as apposed to the dvd-rom format of originals. You should be able to get both the LG,Litey, and maybe even the NEC to all booktype.

An avg person with 1 burner and a couple players wouldn't notice this compatability issue of the No Disc error.Odds are low. Now when playing in a bunch of players, game consoles, and pc drives, higher chance certain drives not recognizing certain backups.

Same goes when other peeps are passing their backups to you. The more drives involved, higher chances of no disc errors.

When multiple dvd-rw drives or used:

1)Quality booktype capable dvd-rw drives + Quality plus format media= A lot less chance of seeing that dreaded No Disc/Dirty Disc/Wrong Region/Wrong Format/or Illegal disc messages that drives get when they don't recognize a backup.

or

2)The person will have to figure out which format that is best suited. They'll have to watch out for who can and can't play their backups.Maybe even watch out which person gets backups from a particular burn engine.Maybe even certain MID coded media. They'll have to conjure up the right "recipe" that suits a certain drive.

or

3) Drive replacement. You've witnessed the compatability difference between burners.Look at feedback for the latest quality booktype capable drives, stick with plus format, and booktype those bad boys. Then you won't have to conjure up any mumbo jumbo recipe and have to worry about which format backup to send to who.

Good Luck!
