dvd archive quality question

i have read several posts that reference to the fact that if you archive your movies to your hd and have them in the ts folders that they may degrade over time. Is this actually the case? If so what would be the alternative to archive them to iso? I am using sage tv and a sage extender for video playback. I am storing them on a 1 tb maxtor gigabyte nas.

all HDDs have been known to crash, even the best, so either raid stripe them or burn to disc for archival

thanks, but the question had nothing to do with the crashing of hard drives or raid but it did have to do with the integrity of various archiving formats.

crashing is a form of data degredation

the best optical discs stored ideally can last 30+ years

Someone's been pulling your leg. Optical media may well degrade but files on a hard drive don't degrade or decompose. They can certainly become corrupt but that's true of any data on any hard drive.
