Hey, I'm a newb. I want to know what I should tick or untick in the list to make it safe when I'm downloading games from torrents! So it blocks my IP etc...

Heres a picture!

Check the boxes marked Ads, Spyware, Government and Educational. When you open peer guardian, the lists take a little longer to update but there is a much broader selection for privacy. Set up your torrent client as suggested by your favourite site, and you are good to go.

No NO JAIL FOOD!!!

Hey, I've done what's in the instructions in ur link. And now my peerguardian2 blocks 2 bilions blocks! And it shuts my net down!

Everytime I down game Should I open BlockList Manager and Peer2Guardian at same time Or Should I only open Peer2Guardian?

And will it be okay now to delete the blocklist or Should I keep it..

Block List Manager creates the list of IP's that you pass to Peer Guardian. You follow that link word for word. Then once it's done you close Block List Manager. Then just repeat the process every week or so. Obviously for the duration of the update process you need to either close Peer Guardian or what i do is just disable it (make sure to close your torrent application down first!!), then run BLM. Once BLM overwrites the list file you go into Peer Guardian's List Manager screen and untick the tickbox for the BLM list file then retick the box. This triggers Peer Guardian to re-read the list. Then just set Peer Guardian to enabled and you'll see the total of IP addresses is increased from the previous time you updated.

edit- yes each time you run BLM it'll update the same output file.

This is all pretty pointless really.. because the powers have ways to scan ip's in a swarm without connecting to you at all.

Pointless yes, but like the yearly flu jab, we do it to feel like we're protecting ourselves even if it doesn't :P

I take it you mean you can't surf at the same time as Peer Guardian is running. This will be due to Peer Guardian inadvertantly blocking whatever website you're trying to get to ie it's blocking too many IP addresses. You can get around this by clicking 'Allow Http' in Peer Guardian (if you're paranoid just do this for the duration of your session of surfing), or just use another computer for surfing.

Or how about something like Vuze with Bluetack's blocklist imported or may be the same list PG uses or Protowall. Edit: what if you just have p2p ticked in PG?

Hi creaky and fellow members:

I'm glad I came across this excellent post. I use uTorrent and have never used Peer Guardian.

Is there a user guides on this program? I have absolutely no clue on how to use it.

Also, as khrwii pointed out, will it prevent me was browsing the Internet once I've installed it on my computer.

Thanks,

Hi again; i'm certainly no expert on UTorrent or Peer Guardian but yes, there's plenty guides here in this forum and/or other forums around the site.
If i were you though, with no protection (real or peace of mind protection!) i'd just follow the Block List Manager tutorial word for word ASAP and get Peer Guardian blocking 2billion odd IP addresses, and worry about the details later :)

As to internet surfing being (potentially) blocked, see my previous post above. These days i don't worry about that side of things as i have a dedicated machine for UTorrent; in fact now i even have usable internet use (ie for surfing) on all other machines/games consoles on my network whilst UTorrent is running as i've been experimenting with 'QOS' (Quality of Service) and whilst i'm no expert on QOS (it's a bit tedious for my liking LOL) i seem to have found a happy medium in my QOS settings; it's probably basic compared to what the QOS experts out there use but it's infinitely more than i had before i discovered QOS, usually with torrenting it's the old tale of torrenting or usable internet access, but not both as torrenting loves to absorb, use and devour as much of your bandwidth as it can get it's grubby little mitts on :)

Thanks for the advice. I've check via search and under guides and I can't find the tutorial on Block List Manager and Peer Guardian. New programs are always intimidating and I have no clue how to use them or set them up.

Thanks,

"It's behind you", well above you anyway :) ~ Block List Manager (BLM) is here http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_jump.cfm/755831/4577512
No idea on where any Peer Guardian guides are, to be honest there's very little to it, but i'm sure there's a how-to here somewhere..

edit- here you go, this'll do, it's old but sufficient ~ http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/peerguardian_2_review.cfm
..for the lists side of things just use BLM instead..

Good stuff, keep us posted. I'm prising myself away from the internet and turning in to watch Gangs of New York; just follow the BLM guide word for word and you should be sorted pretty soon.

Creaky, I found your link for BLM a few weeks ago. I found it was real easy to follow, and import to PG2. I tend to only turn it on when I'm on the torrent sites (mainly pirate bay, demonoid, and limewire) and turn it off when I'm just surfing and going to some gaming sites, as it blocks a few sites I go to. Nice to see who is spying on me!!

Hi rtm27 and creaky:

Your suggestion of turning off sounds like a great idea if it blocks my internet access.

How do you turn it off?

I'm so glad I found this thread. It's rather spooky who's spying on us!

Thanks a bunch,

Ain't that the truth! Any protection (real or otherwise) pointed out by Varnull and Creaky, has got to be better than nothing at all. :)

Cheers.
