I'm trying to encode a disney movie with the x264 codec.
Here are the commands I am passing to mencoder.

"C:\mencoder" "h:\disney.mkv" -o "i:\bb.avi" -passlogfile "i:\bo.log" -aid 0 -ovc x264 -x264encopts pass=1:turbo=1 -nosound -sws 9 -vf scale=656:368,harddup -mc 0

"C:\mencoder" "h:\disney.mkv" -o "i:\bb2.mkv" -passlogfile "i:\bo.log" -aid 0 -ovc x264 -x264encopts pass=2:subq=6:partitions=all:8x8dct:me=umh:frameref=5:bframes=6:b_pyramid:weight_b:bitrate=888 -noskip -nosound -sws 9 -vf scale=656:368,harddup -mc 0

In the first pass, I set it to turbo, and output to an actual video file, just to preview.
The first-pass video does not stutter at all.

But the 2nd pass final HQ video stutters. In the beginning of the disney movie, where it shows the disney castle and starry sky, it stutters. my cpu is fine. it is only using 2% or less.

I don't know which setting is causing it to stutter.

I use this script for other movies like James Bond, and it turns out perfectly, no stutter.

But on this animation movie, it stutters with the same encoder options.
