I read the thread "The Ultimate DVD backup resource thread" but am a newbie to this and am still very confused.
Hopefully someone can help me filter down all of this info into just the info that I need.
When hard drive storage was much more expensive then it is today I archived many of my home movies to DVD (I think I used TMPGEnc DVD Author). Now I think I want them back on my two new terabyte drives.
What program should I use to rip them back to data files (dont want to keep them in DVD format)?
What CODEC and format should I use to keep good quality but keep the files sizes reasonable (eg. someone gave me an an hour video in RealMedia format that is about 200MB, the quality on this is acceptable)
On a similar note, I may rip some of my favorite DVD movies from my library to my HD. Would I/could I use the same technique & programs from question above, or will there be protection problems?

Okay, if I read right, you first want to take movies you have backed up previously on DVD and convert them to store on your HDD. Two programs that I would recommend would be Fairuse Wizard Lite and AutoGK. If you want to keep the files as small as possible then use Fairuse and encode to h264 at 700mb or you can use AutoGK to encode to xvid or divx, but I would recommend a slightly larger file size if you go that route (I use 1400mb, just my opinion)
Second, when you say "My Library" I would prefer a little more clarification as to what you mean before I can offer any further assistance there. If you mean your own personal movies you have at home and own then I might be able to assist, but if you mean the library down the street, I don't know of any programs that will work on those movies.

FairUse Wizard can encode to X.264, also using Xvid/Divx.

Yeah, but the only time I use Fairuse is if I want to keep the file small to which I use h264 @ 700mb. Usually I just use AGK, which I prefer, and encode to xvid @ 1400mb. But that is good info for the OP which I should have included in my post as well. Thanks.
