Help - I can't load songs into iTunes

Hi - I just bought an iPod and downloaded iTunes. When I tried to load my music files into iTunes (file -> add folder to library), it only included about half of my songs. After doing a little research, I found that it loaded the "MPEG Layer 3 Audio" files but not the "Windows Media Audio" or "iTunes Music Player" files. All of these songs were ripped from CDs using Windows Media Player. Does anyone have any idea how I can convert these songs to a format that will load into iTunes (so I can load them into my iPod).
