Hello
Using Nero 6.6.0.18 with WinXP & SP3.
Can still successfully burn in multisessions to a Verbatim DVD-RW until the DVD-RW is nearly full. I then transfer these files to My Documents and try to burn with No Multisession to a Verbatim 16X DVD-R. I have the 'Determine Maximum Speed' box checked and have tried to burn at 4X and 16X using four different discs. The burn process starts and gets to writing to 1% then hangs, the DVD recorder starts whizzing round and after about 20 seconds the process fails. Anyone assist me please?

Firmware is up-to-date, DMA is on, the disc should be ok and Burner must not be dead if you can write RW media?
My only concern is free memory.

Restart PC and try again (4x) without any other application running.
If it still fails try ImgBurn.

Many thanks for your prompt reply and assistance.
Restarted and shut down all apps. Tried to burn DVD-R using Nero at 4X which failed. Tried to burn DVD-R using Imgburn which also failed to write. Tried to burn a file using Nero multisession to DVD-RW which was successful.
If I use a DVD-R which has had a failed burn is it still OK to use or should I bin it? Could this be the cause of the problem? Would a Nero reinstall help?

Which speed did you try with ImgBurn?
And which speed did you burn with RW media?
I couldn?t be sure though if I were you, I?ll try
Burn ?R media with the same speed you burn RW media and
Try new package of ?r discs.
I won?t use the discs I tried and failed. (If you don?t want to trough away yet, put some marking on it and set aside for now.)
You burner might be dying...

Thanks again for your help.
I burned using Imgburn at 4X which failed. I have tried again and Nero burns successfully both as a 'multisession' and no 'multisession' to seperate DVD-RW discs.
I have tried brand new Verbatim DVD-R discs which also fail when burning as 'no multisession'.
Do you really think that the drive could be failing seeing how it burns successfully to DVD-RW but not DVD-R? It is over three years old so if you think that the actual drive is the problem then it's maybe time for a new one.

Again, I couldn?t be sure. Did you burn RW with 4x?
(It might be using different speed to write for ?R and ?RW, CLV vs. CAV, not as user?s choice.)
Though considering your burner?s age and the current price of burners, I suggest getting new one.
If you reside in US, try www.newegg.com. (You can find decent one with $20+ shipped.)

I managed a successful Imgburn at 4X last night but then others failed after this. I think I will invest in a new DVD drive. I live in the UK but they are still relatively cheap over here.

Could you give me some further advice please. My current device is a Phillips 1660P1 but I don't know whether it is IDE/ATA/PATA or SATA - how do I find out? Will I need to buy one similar to the 1660P1 format as I am confused by the different terminology and don't really know what they mean.

According to Videohelp.com, your is IDE.
IDE uses AT Attachment (40/80pin flat cable). So you can check by looking at the cable or back of your drive.

Have purchased and installed a new (Pioneer) DVD rewriter and report that it is working perfectly. I have managed to burn a 'No Multisession' to DVD-R without problems and have also managed to burn a recorded TV programme to DVD-R using Nero Vision Express.
Many thanks for your help over the last few days.
One last question - how should you clean a DVD rewriter lens? I normally use a cheap CD/DVD cleaner disc with those little brushes on them. Do these actually damage the lens and is there a better way of cleaning the lens without opening the unit up?

I?m glad to hear you can burn discs.
To be honest, I never used such cleaner before. And I have no idea how effective it is.
I saw a cleaner disk at local store few days ago. It was $10 (Memorex brand). If I can buy new decent burner the price of $20+, I do not think I?m going to purchase such disc to clean my desktop burner. I do not need it for laptops since it is accessible. If I have trouble with stand-alone DVD player, probably I?ll look for new one too. And I do not believe my burners/players have ever become unusable because of dirty lens. (I meant that with the way and/or where I use. It must not be true for others.)
