hi.........just wondering if anyone can advice me which is the best dvd writer available for buying to-date???
I saw somewhere that suggested the liteon 811s but just wondering if there's an alternative..........ideally I'd like to have a writer which includes DVD+R / DVD+RW / DVD-R / DVD-RW available and the price range around the same as the liteon 811s (about $120)

thanks in advance

I have always associated LiteOn with the word "suck", but I don't know about their DVD writers. Without actually testing head-to-head... in looking at Memorex's 8X DVD writer- it writes DVD+R and DVD-R at 8X and it writes DVD+RW and DVD-RW at 4X- all the other drives that I've looked at does DVD+R at 8X, but DVD-R at 4X, then DVD+RW at 4X and DVD-RW at 2X (or 2.4X or whatever)... Memorex drives looks fairly decent.

Like I said, I haven't tested the drives, but Memorex's specs have them all beat. Real-World application is another story. Noisy? Clunky? Whiney eject? Only that stuff can be tested hands-on.

Oh- the reason Memorex's drive is so attractive right now is Best Buy has insane rebates on it. $155 after rebates for top speed.

The Pioneer 107D can be had for $130 and beats everything out there save one. End of story. Here's a link:

The only drive that compares, the Plextor PX-708A, is a bit more expensive but just as good a drive.

The only company that claims a firmware update will let their drive burn DVD-9s was Pioneer with the 106D. The Memorex dual X1 (X4) is the same drive just renamed. The second story was that the TEST 106D also had some hardware modifications. So no one is sure at this time.
We just have to wait and see.

I have to agree Pioneer 107. With a patch you can

1. Region Free it.
2. 12x DVD extraction (8 gig disc in under 12 minutes)
3. Use 4x discs at 8x

You can't beat that for speed and it's reliability. Now if I can only get rid of my patched A06!

hmm i kinda have a pioneer with my memorex dual x1 which is really a 106D, hoefully they will have a memorex firmware update for the memorex drive. if they dont and have it for the 106D then i will prolly reflash it to be a pioneer drive..

aXidburn, I already re-flashed my Memorex to Pioneer. I got tired of the 2x rip speed they had it locked at. Now if they do come through with the dual layer firmware, I'm ready for it.

I have had several DVD writers. The best is the NEC ND-2500A by far. 8X write + and - and quiet.
