This version appears to offer the option to burn directly (?using Nero?).

However, when I click on "Backup" & the "Backup DVD" box opens, my DVD burner doesn't appear among the "Select Target Device" options. Only "Hard Disk Folder" &/or "ISO Disk Image" appear. If it matters, Nero Enterprise vs. 5.5.10.35 is installed on this PC.

What's wrong & how do I fix it? Your help will be very much appreciated.

Regards, Richard

Aren't you given the option to Browse to a folder? Shrink dumps the files to your HD before burning, you need a folder. Nero is what needs to recognize your burner, not Shrink.

You can turn Auto-burn off in Preferences under Edit.

In the new version you save to folder or ISO then the Nero engine will burn the DVD. You don't have to choose the burner as the target.

I personally turn off burn with Nero in the settings then check the box at the bottom of the "target" window when it pops up that says burn with DVDdecrypter. If you set the target as ISO and have DVDdecrypter on the system then it will automatically burn the DVD.

Thanks for the replies RWG & Donald - they're appreciated.

RWG: Please clarify & expand on your point. Yes, there is an option to browse & save to a target image file. Are you saying that the target needs to be set to "ISO image file" & you then need to disable the "Enable burning with Nero" option in Preferences? How does Nero know it's supposed to burn the image that's in the target file? Does Nero need to be setup in some special way to do so?

For reference, I've tried the method described by Donald where you turn off "burning with Nero" & enable the "burn with DVD Decrypter". It burned OK but (as I recall) I had to be present to start the DVD Decrypter burn - it didn't autostart by itself.

It's my understanding that "burning with Nero" is automatic (so you don't have the extra step of starting the DVD Decrypter burn). This is what I would prefer.

Please help me to better understand these options.

RWG: I just tried what I think you were saying "The target needs to be set to "ISO image file" & you then need to disable the "Enable burning with Nero" option in Preferences"! This works the same as when the Decrypter burn option is used. You have to manually select the ISO file & set Nero to burn it.

I want to use DVD Shrink as described in this link; http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/dvd9_to_dvdr_with_dvd_shrink_page_3.cfm

For anyone following this thread; I was able to get DVD Shrink to auto-burn with Nero. You have to have an updated version of Nero (like Nero 6.0)to do so. Older versions of Nero will not work in this application.

rckowal-

Looks as though you did some experimenting and answered your own questions. Congratulations! You should (unless I'm gravely mistaken) have the option of saving files to your HD or saving a disk image. Files will have IFO, BUP and VOB extensions. Personally, I save files. I use Nero 'DVD-Video' to burn the files to a DVD.

I've been fiddle-fartin around with the 30-day trial CloneDVD 2 - using the files I ripped with Shrink and letting CloneDVD compress it just to compare audio/video results.

Hi folks,
Shrink gives you three options to choose from.

Select target device:
Your burner
ISO Disk Image
Hard Disk Folder

If I want to auto-burn with Nero I select my burner and enable Nero in prefrences.

If I want to auto-burn with Decrypter I select The ISO Disk Image and select the Decrypter box.

If I want to burn it later, I encode it to a Hard Disk Folder.

Cheers,
Frank

With Nero burn turned off I don't have to touch anything once started. DVDdecryter automatically burns the dvd. Then I can burn another with a simple click. Slightly easier than Nero.

If you use the ISO option it is easier to store and file and keep track of plus the ISO is automatically named and I never have to create and name a storage folder.
Useful if you rip multiple discs without removing files.

Hi All, Thanks for your replies - this should turn out to be a very helpful thread for anyone that gets confused by DVD Shrinks new options.

Fasfrank said it the most clearly! There are 3 options given, however (based on my experiences) the "Burner" option doesn't appear unless there is a suitable Nero version installed on the PC.

RWG & Donald also emphasized it! "Image" is used to burn with Decrypter or "Hard Drive" to store it for later use.

I don't usually care to save the image or the file so I don't bother with the "Hard Drive" or the "Image" options. However, if one wants to save it, this is certainly a convenient way to do so.

You don't need nero if you have DVDdecryter. I don't bother with nero for a quick rip and burn.
ISO option with DVDshrink is the simplest and easiest for me. I have a lot of movies to backup and quick with simple is important.

Donald
