can you please help me!
i have a r4 cart with a 2GB SD micro in - however this is no longer big enough to store all of the games my son wants to play. i went out and bought a 8GB SDHC micro card i asked the salesman if the HC makes any difference he says no. i have grasped the idea that the r4 card takes up to 4GB and if i want to use the 8GB card i need to use the r4 ultra. is this right? and if so is this something i have to buy or is there software that will upgrade my current r4 to take this 8GB sdhc card. sorry to be thick but this is all new to me. thanks in advance for your help

I am afraid the salesman was wrong

There are differences in micro SD and micro SDHC, it is in the addressing structure.

The R4 can take the old style SD cards, these were readily available up to 2GB, a very few 4GB were made but they were not very reliable and were quickly dropped as the new SDHC format came in.

The cards look identical but the device you have can only see the addressing on the old style cards, however I doubt that you could find a non HC 4GB so without updating the flash card you are stuck with a 2GB (or another one to swap over?)

If you are looking to upgrade the card then I would now avoid anything with the R4 name in it, the original R4 team are gone and there are now 14 different cards all calling themselves R4 a real nightmare.

There are however plenty of great cards out there.
Cyclo DS - expensive but agreed on many forums to be the best
M3 Real - with the new firmware Sakura - it is up with the best but a bit cheaper (beware of fakes, they call the wesite M3adaptese.com not M3adapter.com)
AceKard - reliable and now with the 2i version is also DSi compatable
Edge - A cyclo clone with a few of the bells and whistles missing.

DSTT - cheap but a lot of fakes around (need different firmware) and have a reputation (it is rare but more than other cards) of blowing DS fuses

This is very helpfull, however -

i've just purchased an r4 ds hc ( or one of the many fakes you mention) and an 8 gb card. I can't get it working with any of the firmware i've tried. Any ideas?

Look at the thread below about loading issues - a guy who answers on there called puggwash - the resident expert on the R4 - generally it is incorrect firmware, the site in my signature hosts all the firmwares, but it will be trail and error
