Using AVI software to backup movies to external harddrive

I would like to back up a few movies to my external harddrive to later play on my Digital TV. I have plans to use the laptop as player of the movies saved to the external hard drive. I plan on using Media player classic(or possibly WMedia player 11) if I get better recomendation to go that way. I have downloaded AutoGK but am unfamiliar with using it.

Several questions come to mind.
1. Does anyone know of a step by step guide??
2. Is their a better software that will allow me to convert the files??
3. I am open to suggestions on a better way of doing things especially using free software.

Thank you for the quick reply. I will be using vista operating system. I wonder has anyone had better luck using fairuse wizard????

How do you convert the files to ISO after dvdfabhdd???
