I capture video from my Sony DCR-HC46 as a 16:9AVI using "DV Video Encoder -- type 1" compression. The quality of these files are AWESOME, but naturally the file sizes are far too large.
I would like to convert these files to DivX, but I can't find a way to do so without losing the 16:9 format. Are there any free utilities that can do this? I've tried DivX's native encoding program, but it doesn't maintain 16:9.
What do you mean by "doesn't maintain 16:9." ?
Usually, AVI files are 1 to 1. For example:
A 4*3 movie is often encoded at 640*480,
16*9 (1.777) @ 640*360, (2.35) @ 640*272,
etc,etc.
What do you aim to do with the Divx conversion? watch it on the TV?
or computer?
I would just resize the DV at something like 856*480 and see
if it's what you want. If you plan to play the Divx in a
standalone player, use something like 720*408.
