Hey I was wondering if there existed a DVD ripping program that worked this way: you set a size you want the file to be and the program gives you an output with the best possible quality at that file size. I ask because most rips I see out there are about CD-size (700 MB) but ones I do are either over or under (like 500-range). Does such a program exist?

Hi,

exactly what are you asking

1) is there a program that can decrypt a dvd and reduce (compress) size to what you wish :

a) in dvd format (mpeg 2)
b) in avi format (with format dvd to avi conversion)

Jo

Note : almost all compression methods reduce picture quality, while some formats are more efficient than others as h264 is better than mpeg2 and avi

Either I suppose, but I'd go with .avi. What I mean is, it lets me enter what size I want the file to be. Say I choose 700 MB. The resulting rip will be as good as it can for that size (like something 90 min would surely turn out better than something at 150 min). Does that help?

I believe AutoGK convert's to avi in 700 MB or 1400 MB but not sure if the DVD has to be already ripped to the HD. DVDFabHDDecrypter Pro rip's to avi but isn't free. AlltoAvi also will but the file has to be already ripped to your HD and you have to process each vob containing the movie and then you end with that number of avi (4 or 5) that have to be joined. Tried it once to see, seemed to give a smaller avi of good quality as I remember.

Except for DVDFab, I have not seen a program that can decrypt/rip and convert to an AVI/mpeg4, whatever... all in one. At least not one that has the decrypting algorithms up to date and is worth a penny anyway.
So basically, just get DVDFab to rip the DVD to your HDD, and then you can use AutoGK to convert to whatever AVI size you want(by looking at it it has a "custom setting", not just 700MB or 1400MB; or you can use HandBrake to convert using Divx, or even better, H.264.

Same can be done with FairUse Wizard.

There's one I just found called ImTOO DVD Ripper that lets you set sizes but I've yet to get anything on the dot exactly (like for 700, I'll get 683). Anyone know of this one?

Like I said, there are plenty programs, free of cost, that will rip and convert your DVD to whatever size you want, but will not be able to decrypt them.

None of them that I have ever used will hit it exactly. They will almost always be under by a small bit. For instance, the default in AGK is 700mb (1 cd) you wouldn't want it to be exactly 700 or it would not fit without overburning. You can set your target but due to the nature of demuxing, remuxing, and encoding I don't know how it could be an exact science. Just my 2 cents.
