Ripping DVD to Hard Disc - Best Format and Guide?

I'm looking to rip my DVDs to my Hard drive so I can play them through my network. For playback on a 32" LCD.

Im wanting to keep the file size to 1 - 1.5gb whilst keeping the quality as high as I can.

So:

What programs should i use? (Ive been recommended AnyDVD and TMPGEnc 4 Xpress atm)
What Format should i use? (again ive see .h264 and MKV tossed about)
What settings should i use?

im really new to this sort of thing so any suggestions (especially on optimal settings) and a link to a guide would be really appreciated as im a bit lost in what im looking for!

AutoGk, good quality from what I hear (and free, I think): http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/...sing_autogk.cfm AnyDVD isn't free but will break any protection and rip, DVDFabHDDecrypter is free and does the same.

Sorry, no idea, try the default, if no good, I guess you'll need to experiment.
