This is almost unbelievable. I bought Nicholas Nickelby from my video retailer. It's a previously viewed. I tried to copy it using Shrink and it failed in the middle of the 4th VOB file. This disc is a flipper with both fulland widescreen versions. Both sides fail at the same place. I then brought it back to my retialer and they switched it for another.
I am having the exact same thing happen to me on this replacement disc..and it's happening at the exact sector of the 4th VOB file. I have tired to use DECRypter as well and it goes into retries at that location.
Anyone had this problem with this specific title before.. or failing that...any clues buy anyone ?

I must admit to not having tried that specific disc , if doing full-disk back up though ... you might want to try just ripping main movie VOB files and title set IFO (perhaps)

Hiya,
Thanks you both for responding. I also wanted to add that I tried ripping the VOB by itself and it still goes into it's retry fit.
I can't even extract VOB #4.
I can however extract a part of it.. so what I'll do is... Keep the partial file instead of deleting it.. and play it to see where it fails. Ill let you know how I fare...

Sounds very much like the disc is damaged / scratched quite badly !!

And this is the second one I've purchased (exchanged)... Guess I'll have to go for 3.

The fact that original dvd's are pressed (not burned) the defect may be on all copies if the master was damaged. The defect may not show up in playback but only in decrypting\copying. If the 3rd one does the same its probably in all copies.

I think you may be right on that one. I did notice a blank (black) frame at that spot on the original. It goes from one scene to another but you do see the black frame. This also happened to me on "The Beach", (While they bury the guy , after the shark attack).
Anyone know of a good VOB editor... so I can cut out the culprit ?
BTW.. my second copy works on the fullscreen side.. It may have been a mastering problem as suggested.
Thanks to all for your input to date.. again... a VOB editor tip would be appreciated.

Hi CK, There is a free tool called VOBRATOR that may do what you want. Go to www.dvdrhelp.com and do a search under tools. I never used it so I'm not sure exactly how it works or if it will do the job for you. It may help.

Could this be a Dual layer DVD?? and if it is i don't think you will be able to rip it!

Here's a question for you, the answer to which might give you a hint as to why you didn't win a cookie...
The vast majority of Commercially Produced DVDs are:
[ ] DVD-5 and hold just under 5 Gigs
[ ] DVD-9 and hold approx 9 Gigs
[ ] DVD-10 and hold just under 10 Gigs over two sides
[ ] DVD-18 and hold appox 18 Gigs over two sides
