I'm using Nero 8 Express.

My pc's write speed is 40x (CD) / 16x (DVD).

I like to burn my CD's / DVD's at a lower speed than what my drives maximum is and my blank CD's / DVD's maximum speeds are. I was told the lower the speed the less errors you'll receive.

Just lately, my DVD's will skip and totally freeze up when playing in a DVD player. I'm thinking it might have to do with the new blank DVD's I recently bought. Memorex DVD-R 16X.

Now my question is... I change the settings in Nero Express in Burn Settings> Write Speed from Maximum to 4x. But every time it burns, it burns at 16x. How can I make it burn at 4x only?

Thanks

8x should be fine on 16x discs, just make sure that you put the discs in before you hit the Burn button, to ensure that Nero can recognise the discs first, that'll stop Nero trying to burn at max.

OK, I did as you suggested. I put the blank CD in first. Waited a while then I opened Nero. I'm making a Jukebox Audio CD. I loaded my songs in Nero. I went to change the write speed but now the only options are.... 32x 24x 16x. It no longer gives me the option to burn at 8x or 4x. What am I doing wrong?

That's a CD :) , it's probably just down to whatever burn 'strategies' that the burners' firmware has listed for that particular CD.

I personally burn all data CD's at 24x, all audio CD's at 16x (those speeds are just out of habit over the years) and for DVD's i only burn at 8x (regardless of whether i use 8x or 16x discs, though the majority of my DVD's are 16x these days).

Basically if you put the blank disc in after hitting the burn button, Nero will go at max speed, always put the disc in first so that Nero can properly interrogate the disc and thus the burn speed dropdown box will reflect the relevant speeds that it knows it can write at for that particular disc.
I don't use Express, have used Burning Rom since Victorian times, but i don't think it makes a difference, you should always make sure to load the disc before proceeding with burns..

Woops. Yea, I did try your way with a CD. I'll try and burn a movie putting the 16x blank DVD in first. Hopefully you'll be around in about a half hour. I have to get another movie ready to go.

Yeah i'll be here, i'm always here.
If you think about it it's common sense that the disc needs to be in the drive otherwise Nero (or a.n.other software) can't possibly detect the disc info until the disc goes in the drive :)
Let me know the model of your burner at some point, we'll see if we can find a list of the firmware's contents, then we can see what burn strategies apply to whichever discs
