Speeding up Encoding (not rendering) time?

I want to know the best way for speeding up encoding time if someone could point this out. Is it CPU processing?

Also, are some programs better than others?

I'm interested in converting avi, mpeg , rm files to say a VCD (or dvd for that matter) and noticed Ulead takes a bit of time to do this. So, are there programs better than others to speed this up? Would a DUAL CPU setup help (Ulead, Adobe Encore), or would a SINGLE (fastest) available, be the better solution.

Another idea is to build another PC, or even two, network them and have them each ENCODE on their own, then bring them all together when they are done.

I use MainConcept MPEG Encoder 1.4 , which takes no time at all (compared to all other encoders). I take whatever file (avi/xvid/mpg etc) and encode to MPEG2 - DVD compliant (so correct resolution & 48 kHz audio).

Then TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.5 to convert to .vob format (sorting chapter + menus out as you go)

Is real quick for me & this is me still using old AMD 900 PC !! ; )
